Finding a good local bakery in your suburb for your weekly visit to gather pastries and bread is an essential task for all foodies.

Our reporters have revealed their favourite local spots and explored new venues upon recommendation from friends, and this list did not disappoint.

If you are on your way through from Rochester to Bendigo, the Elmore Bakery is one stop you should add to your list.

It has a large range of baked cakes, slices and pies and there are gluten free carrot cupcakes that are always in high demand.

The coffee is very good and the seasonal treats are a real stand out.

The demand for the Easter buns is so great that customers are encouraged to lodge their orders weeks in advance to avoid missing out.

A recent promotion on National Donut Day saw the bakery receive more than 800 responses to a competition to win two packs of gourmet doughnuts in red velvet, strawberry m & Ms and Reese chocolate flavours.

The bakery keeps very generous opening hours, which is excellent for people passing through the area late in the afternoon.

It is open from 6am until 5pm from Monday to Friday and until 4pm on weekends.

Hot Daily Bread in Cranbourne West lives up to its name, serving the southeastern suburb with delicious, steaming loaves daily.

Located at Shop 8 in the Sandhurst Centre on Monahans Rd, the little bakery might be tucked away but its popularity speaks for itself.

Serving up loaves of all kinds, pastries and sweets, Hot Daily Bread is a fan favourite in Cranbourne.

This bakery in Melbourne's north goes the extra mile to elevate their customers experience of heading out to buy a loaf of bread.

Wild Life is found inside an old mechanic warehouse in Brunswick East, but now is a haven of all things baked goods.

Inside, there‘s a panel of windows where customers can see the magic happen, as rustic loaves are fermented for 24 hours in the process.

There‘s also delicious gourmet toasties, sandwiches, baguettes, cakes and pastries that are simply mouth-wateringly good.

Despite competing with a number of high-quality coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants along Seddon’s Victoria St, Sourdough Kitchen is a clear stand out owing to their sweet treats and loaded sandwiches.

Sourdough Kitchen has croissants, doughnuts, sandwiches, and an extensive range of freshly baked bread such as Pumpkin, Light Rye, and Ciabatta.

The bakery is seemingly always busy with people catching sunlight outside and is a known favourite for some of the Western Bulldogs players often seen grabbing a bite and coffee after a midweek training.

The must try items on the menu include the custard doughnut and bechamel croissant.

Wild Grains Bakehouse has been a huge hit with locals and tourists in Healesville since opened in 2011.

“Everything is made on site and wonderful, friendly staff. Generously community-minded,” customer Kath said.

Co-owner Julie Demanuele said the bakery had a number of popular items.

“We have a really nice traditional sourdough, our vanilla slices people always return for those, and our cakes,” she said.

“We do great coffees and we have an amazing sandwich bar with a full range of a lot of things.

“We have a mixed sandwich pack which is a top seller.

“We have gluten free and vegan options as well.

“We have good bakers to start with they make a good product and we have great staff out the front, nice and friendly and personable, and hopefully nothing is ever too hard for us.”

Known for its award-winning pies, including Thai chicken and chunky pies, egg and bacon rolls, and delicious sausage rolls, the bakery has been a hit since opening almost 20 years ago.

It also sells bread, sweets, doughnuts, and everything is made fresh on site, with vegan options available, manager Taylah Gerrard said.

“Best pies, jam doughnuts are to die for, they are so fresh,” customer Nancy said.

Other popular bakeries in Yarra Ranges include Launch Bakery Launching Place, Mount Evelyn bakery, Wandin Bakery, Golden Pastry Bakery Mooroolbark, Mt Evelyn- York Rd bakery, Glaysdale Bakery and The Frolicking Frog Lilydale.

Known for its vanilla slices and pies, a trip to the northern suburbs isn’t complete without a visit to this award-winning bakery.

Whittlesea Bakehouse won the best plain meat pie award at the 33rd Official Great Aussie Pie competition in 2019.

The bakery’s vanilla slices have also been voted the best in Victoria.
