A Whittlesea bakery’s vanilla slices have been named the best in Victoria for the second year in a row.
Whittlesea Bakehouse won the title of Victoria’s best vanilla slice at the Baking Association of Australia’s Victorian Bakery Show, held in Shepparton last month.
Pastry chefs Michael Valenti and Adrian Caporetto work together to create the delicious treats, using traditional white icing and vanilla flavoured custard.
Mr Caporetto said they were thrilled to win the title again.
“When they announced who won we said ‘Oh my god really? – we were ecstatic.
“Especially to win two years in a row – we know we’re doing the right thing, so we won’t change it.”
Mr Caporetto said their vanilla slices had velvety smooth custard, nice thin soft icing and crispy pastry.
“You’ve got to keep tasting it when you make it, and if it needs something extra add it in,” he said.
“We work on the theory if it’s not good enough for us to eat, it’s not good enough for anybody.”
Mr Caporetto said there was huge interest in vanilla slices in Melbourne.
“It's a big thing, the more you research, there are Facebook groups, and people who drive around everywhere to buy them,” he said.
“We’ve had a lot of new faces in already.
“It’s really good for the area too, a lot of people don’t know there is a shopping strip in Whittlesea.”
The bakery has also won several awards for its pies and sausage rolls.
It’s at 34 Church St Whittlesea.
