Watch Confidential at the Caulfield Cup with Campbell Brown, Kate Ceberano, Kevin Sheedy and Jacqui Felgate

AFL champ Campbell Brown has revealed how a night out celebrating his horse’s major race win landed him in hot water — and significantly hurt his hip pocket.

AFL champion Campbell Brown has reflected on his big win at Magic Millions, which he had to use to pay a QC to get him out of jail on the same day.

Asked about his luck at the horse racing track, Brown told the Confidential at the Caulfield Cup webcast: “I’ve had a couple (of big wins) when I backed my own horse, Sweet Idea. She won the Magic Millions (event on the Gold Coast) a few years ago.

“Unfortunately, a lot of my winnings went to my QC to get me out of prison that night. While I made some money, it was quickly paid out.”

Brown, who played for Hawthorn and the Gold Coast Suns during his AFL career, had gone to a Broadbeach nightclub to celebrate the win.

“I came of the nightclub to get some friends in, and when I turned around to go back in, they wouldn’t let me in. We had a bit of a discussion out the front,” he said.

“Then a couple of plain clothes policemen walked over and asked, ‘What’s the problem?’ Then, inexplicably, we were on the ground in handcuffs.

“They arrested us for public nuisance, and refusing orders, a couple of bogus charges.

I spent the night in the clink.

“I was still in my suit. One minute I was in the nightclub … and I never returned.”

Brown, and former Hawks Shane Crawford, Luke Hodge and Ben Dixon also collected big on the 2007 Caulfield Cup while on a footy trip in Las Vegas.

“We were in the Qantas club about to fly to Vegas, and Crawf got a call from Danny O’Brien. (Crawford) said: ‘Danny thinks he can win the Caulfield Cup.’ So we logged on, and backed the horse. It was about 10 to 1 (odds),” Brown said.

“We went off to Las Vegas and didn’t think too much of it.”

It was 11pm on Friday in Vegas when the Caulfield Cup ran in Melbourne.

“We couldn’t get it on the TV. This was before iPhones,” Brown, who is now an SEN broadcaster, said.

“I rang my old man and he put the phone up to the TV and Danny’s horse won.

“We were standing out the front of the Bellagio … all gathered, cheering because the horse won, then the water (fountains outside the Bellagio) started going off. It was one of the great moments.”

Meanwhile, Jonathan and Kylie Brown were looking forward to bringing Caulfield Cup fun and excitement to their home on Saturday.

The stylish couple got into the spring racing spirit with Cup chance Persan, trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

“I love getting dressed up, the fashion, atmosphere, and the sound of the horses when they come down the straight,’’ Kylie said.

“We will be doing this year from home, so will try and bring some of that energy to the lounge room with the family.”

Lions great and broadcaster Brown said the couple would do a Cup sweep for their three children.

He said he missed the “incredible rumble of the horses when they go past the post the first time”.

His favourite memory was in 2002.

“I backed Northerly and he won,’’ Brown said.

“The excitement was incredible, the great Northerly won me the race that day.

“Always take the field in the first leg of the Quaddie.”

The Browns said they can’t wait to be back trackside.

“We can’t even remember the last time we got dressed up; the thought of getting back to the track being among the atmosphere again is beyond exciting,’’ Kylie said.
