U.S import Katrina Scherer opens up about Youtube clip that put her on the path to the AFLW

A YOUTUBE clip was enough to convince Katrina Scherer Australian rules football was a sport she had to try. Now the Bond University player stands on the edge of an AFLW career.

Katrina Scherer kicks five goals for Bond University.

A YOUTUBE clip was enough to convince Katrina Scherer Australian rules football was a sport she had to try.

Scherer was living at Ohio State University two years ago when a friend of hers came across a flyer promoting Australia’s native game.

“She pulled one off for me so I Googled it and saw it on YouTube and thought it was a sport I had to play,” Scherer said.

Two years later the money saved from working part-time at a flower shop has helped fund the 25-year-old’s trip to Australia where she has since thrived, kicking eight goals in three games while playing for Bond University in the QWAFL.

“It’s been amazing getting the experience down here, I’m really lucky,” Scherer said.

“I really feel like I have been submerged in the whole Australian football culture.

“It was definitely different to anything I had experienced.”

Brisbane Lions coach Craig Starcevich helped open the door for Scherer’s Australian trip and has already said the 62kg forward, who stands at 180cm, has the foundations of a potential AFLW player.

Scherer said she came to Queensland for experience but will leave with an ambition to return if drafted to an AFLW club.

“When I came down here it was more so for the experience because it was great getting around these girls who have been playing for longer than just a few years like in the states,” Scherer said.

“I was coming for experience but Craig said there is a lot of potential in me and my coach back home thinks there is as well.

“Getting drafted into the AFLW would definitely be a highlight and goal to reach.”

Scherer is in Australia on a tourist visa and hopes to lead Bond University to the QWAFL grand final before leaving at the end of August.

Bond University hold fourth on the ladder, one win ahead of University of Queensland, with two rounds to play but the Bullsharks will have a bye in the final regular round.

It makes today’s clash with Yeronga South Brisbane at home an important one as they try to make the QWAFL finals in their first season in the competition.
