Young Gold Coast Suns fan hails AFL win over Sydney Swans as the best day of his life

IT was the greatest game in Suns history and the best day of Jed Gregory’s life.

In a crowd of 32,565 fans largely dressed in red and white at the SCG on Saturday, 13-year-old Gregory witnessed history when the Gold Coast Suns beat Sydney by 24 points for the first time in their history.

The Burleigh Bombers junior has spent five years barracking for the Suns, travelling to Sydney to watch each clash against the Swans with NSW based grandfather Paul Gregory, an SCG member, who made the trip up to Queensland to do the same when the two sides met at Metricon Stadium.

It had been a fruitless task but a family tradition both loved.

The Year 7 Hillcrest Christian College student flew south alone for the weekend expecting the Suns to not only get beaten again, but smashed.

But the Gold Coast member and Mudgeeraba resident, who was among just handful of Suns supporters at the game, lived every junior footy fans dream.

“It’s been a good tradition over the years but (Gold Coast) always get smashed by the Swans,” father Adam Gregory said.

“He was over the moon that not only had he gone down but that they had got up. He was pretty chuffed with it all.

“There were hardly any supporters in the crowd and going in Jed didn’t think they had a chance of winning. There was a sea of red and white around him but he was able to cheer at the end.”

It hasn’t been easy for most Suns fans over the course of an unsuccessful eight year presence in the AFL.

Gregory could have easily become a Swans fan before moving north with his family but something about the Suns drew him in and he is prepared for the long haul.

“I keep on telling him some fans never see their team win a premiership but he gets it and he is in for the long haul,” Gregory said.

“We weren’t really an AFL family before moving up (to the Gold Coast) but there was something that just clicked with him about the Suns.”
