SFL: Levi Casboult to face Andrew Phillips in Glenorchy and Lauderdale clash

A former AFL big man will make a return to Tasmanian footy this weekend in a game which will see him go head-to-head with an ex-Carlton teammate. Plus the young gun who could thrive from his arrival.

Levi Casboult is making a return to Tasmanian footy this weekend and when he lines up, a familiar face will be standing across from him.

The recently retired Carlton and Gold Coast big man will pull on the boots for Glenorchy against SFL Premier League benchmark Lauderdale where former Carlton teammate Andrew Phillips is one of the stars.

Casboult was born in Hobart and first picked up a footy in Fingal’s Auskick program before he took on soccer during school and eventually picked the sport up again when his family moved to Melbourne when he was 15.

The 35-year-old will make the one off appearance after being brought to the Magpies through a personal friend.

Casboult is playing regularly for Palm Beach Currumbin in the QAFL this season and has booted 20 goals in six games.

“It’s worked out really well for us. It will help even out the contest in the ruck,” Glenorchy coach Josh Arnold said.

“He’s played on the biggest stage and a lot of our boys have said they’re really excited to play about him.

“Someone of his calibre can make a real point of difference. Hopefully we can get a big crowd there on the day.”

Developing ruck Ewan Dillon, who could still be playing under-18 footy, has carried the ruck load for the Magpies in the last fortnight and Arnold is excited by the prospect of what he could learn.

Dillon, who represented Tasmania at under-16 level, made his senior debut in the Tasmanian State League last season.

“He’s playing some good footy at the moment,” Arnold said.

“To learn from someone like Levi who has played so many games of AFL is only going to hold him in good stead.

“He’ll be able to watch him up close and personal which will be fantastic for his own development.”

Glenorchy comes into the clash with the unbeaten Bombers on the back of a 51-point win over Brighton.

Arnold said the last two games, which included a loss to Clarence, were more of what he wanted to see from his side.

“At the bye, we weren’t where we wanted to be but we took lessons away from those games,” Arnold said.

“We sat down as a group and spoke about where we could improve and credit to the boys, they’ve taken everything on board.

“We executed well against Brighton, now the challenge is to bring it again against Lauderdale.”
