2027 AFL Draft prospect Koby Bewick discusses whether he will use his father-son links to join Essendon

Essendon father-son prospect Koby Bewick speaks on the potential of following in his father’s footsteps at Essendon and the hype surrounding him as a predicted top 2027 draft star.

Predicted future no.1 AFL draft pick Koby Bewick’s draft stocks have risen at the AFL Under-16 National Championships but the son of a former Essendon premiership star is no guarentee to follow his father to the Bombers.

Bewick was among the best of the 2027 draft class in the second round of the championships on the Gold Coast this week.

The son of Darren Bewick will be a prized pick but Bombers fans needing an ounce of good news will be kept waiting by the future star who is in no rush to decide his future.

“I have just gone though the motions, just getting through (the Championships) but that’s definitely a thought in the future,” he said when asked whether he had made a decision yet.

“Me and T (Victoria Metro teammate Tevita Rodan) are in the NGA (Next Generation Academy) at Essendon so we’re there a lot of the time.”

The teenager still has plenty of time to make a decision but it could be the major coup needed to help spark a Bombers rebuild if he opts to commit to the club as a father-son.

Bewick revealed the impact his father has had on his development.

“He’s my number one supporter, always there for me when I need him,” he said.

“He gives all these little things to work on, what I need to do and I lean on him all the time.

“We talk heaps, he’s like my best friend.”

Bewick is a dynamic ball magnet who starred in Friday’s clash against South Australia despite being deployed in a new role.

“Obviously I love playing midfield, it was a new role playing halfback but I enjoyed playing that,” he said.

“A big thing going into the carnival was to show your brand and mine’s taking on the game and kicking. I thought I showed that pretty well.”

The Victoria Metro star has been unfazed by the hype surrounding him and remains focused on ensuring he performs at his peak throughout the next two years.

“It’s obviously there and I hear all that stuff but I have got to try and block that out and play footy how I want,” Bewick said.

“I want to get bigger and fitter. Once that happens I’ll build my game from there.

“I’m just going through the process and ticking each box along the way.”

Bewick has formed a strong partnership with Victoria Metro teammate Tevita Rodan with the pair both highly touted prospects ahead of the 2027 draft.

“I have been tracking along well, especially with Tevita, we help each other out,” he said.

“We go against each other at local level, then obviously interleague, Calder and now Vic we’ve gelled along now and we’re best friends.

“Both our dads played AFL so we lean on each other on that when we need help.”
