This season all eight rounds and finals from the Langer Trophy and the Year 10 Walters Cup will be LIVE STREAMED on KommunityTV in a deal with the NRL and Queensland Secondary Schools Rugby League. The Brisbane Broncos-sponsored competitions were named after Broncos’ greats Allan Langer and Kevin Walters respectively.

In this story we feature most captains or a senior player from each of the schools in a competition that beckons to be the closest in recent memory.

Javon Andrews (Marsden SHS)

Position: Five-eight

Junior club: Souths Acacia Ridge and Logan Brothers

NRL idol: Shaun Johnson (Warriors) and Benji Marshall (Wests Tigers)

Biggest influence: My dad John who has helped me a lot through my sport

Second favourite position: I have played lock and second row here and there, and sometimes fullback.

Any points to prove: As a group we have a point to prove. Last year we did very well but we have higher expectations this year and we want to play our best as a group.

Your favourite other sport: Golf. Myself and my dad like golf - it is a nice, calm sport.

Biggest larrikin: Hayden Watson - he is little but a pest.

Zac Garton (Caloundra SHS)

Position: Second row

Junior club: Redcliffe Dolphins and Gympie Devils

NRL idol: Jeremiah Nanai (Cowboys) because of his footwork late at the line and the way he runs good lines. I like his ability in the air, the way he really gets up.

Also David Fifita - he runs hard and breaks tackles.

Biggest influence: My mum (Sonya) has been a massive influence. She moved down to the Coast (from Gympie) to be with me so I would be more comfortable. In terms of coaches Mr (Toby) Poole, Mr (Craig) Monaghan and Mr Andrew Gerckan. He was my first coach in grade nine and made me feel comfortable when I first arrived.

Second favourite position: I played a bit of centre coming through. I came through as a centre and five-eight and when I was about 15 years, I put on a bit of size and moved to an edge.

Any points to prove: As a group we have a point to prove. Last year we won a game which was awesome, but I thought we could have done a bit more. This year in our second year we can put more of a stamp on it.

Your favourite other sport: Surfing. Dicky Beach. I go there most afternoons.

Biggest larrikin: Noah Noke. He is a good character, and he would make you laugh if you met him.

Zane Harrison (Palm Beach Currumbin SHS)

Position: Halfback

Junior club: Tweed Heads Seagulls

NRL idol: Nathan Cleary

Biggest influence: My parents Mel and James who have sacrificed a lot to get me to where I am today.

Second favourite position: I played some fullback growing up, and I have played a bit of hooker.

Any points to prove: As a squad, we were second in the national championships last year and we have a point to prove. Our whole squad has a point to prove.

Your favourite other sport: Surfing or golf. I am into golf at the moment Palmer, Tallebudgera and Murwillumbah. I still surf but it is hard with footy.

Biggest larrikin or pest: Kaleb Smith and Nelson Makaafi.

Anton Whaiapu (Keebra Park)

Position: Second row

Junior club: Southport Tigers and finished at Burleigh Bears

NRL idol: Shaun Johnson or Johnathan Thurston

Biggest influence: My older brother Whailer in all aspects of life, whether that is footy or other stuff.

Second favourite position: Everyone would have liked to play fullback or half, but my second favourite position is lock.

Any points to prove: As a group we want to improve. We all know Keebra Park has a big team list each year (and has a proud history), but we just want to do our job and not follow all the hype around our school. We want to get down to business and get the job done.

Your favourite other sport: Basketball. Basketball. It is my way of getting away from rugby league. I follow the Miami Heat. My favourite player used to be Dwyane Wade.

Biggest larrikin or pest: Mason Barber. Everyone knows it. He is the pest. He is a funny guy but sometimes he gets on my nerves, he keeps poking at you.

Sam Martin (Ipswich SHS)

Position: Hooker

Junior club: Norths Tigers

NRL idol: Harry Grant

Biggest influence: My Parents, Greg and Mandy

Second favourite position: Halfback

Any points to prove: We just lost the final last year and we have a point to prove.

Your favourite other sport: Boxing. I liked watching boxing and I used to box when I was younger.

Biggest larrikin or pest: Tom Parker. He is on you 24/7.

Amare Wynyard (Redcliffe SHS)

Position: Hooker

Junior club: Redcliffe Dolphins

NRL idol: Erin Clark, the Titans hooker

Biggest influence: Definitely Barry Berrigan and Scott Murray, my two coaches.

Second favourite position: Lock.

Any points to prove: The whole squad. In the last two years we have not won a game yet. That is really driving us.

Your favourite other sport: Basketball.

Biggest larrikin: Henry Sologinkin. He is a good bloke, really straight but is funny just the way he puts it out there.

Maddox Goodwin (Wavell SHS)

Position: Second rower

Junior club: Norths Devils

Biggest influence: My Mum Haley

Second favourite position: No.13

Any points to prove: Zac Herdegen. I think he felt this way by not making the Queensland schoolboys side last year (although he was named last week in the 2024 state schoolboys outfit).

Your favourite other sport: I dabbled in Australian football before moving to Wavell

Biggest larrikin: Mason Phillips. He chirps his teammates more than the opposition.

On the field he is a good player but at training he chews your ear off.

Duquan Talaepa (Mabel Park SHS)

Position: Second rower

Junior club: Moreton Bay Raiders

NRL idol/ any past Mabel alumni: I probably looked up to (Alex) Leapai, just the leadership that he showed and the way he captained the boys.

Biggest influence: My Mum Krystal. She has done everything for me pretty much my whole life. She has always been there and has taken me to all my trainings. Also Larry Dickson. Larry has done a lot for me. He helped me get to where I am, helped my game, told me I can get better and opened an opportunity at Redcliffe.

Second favourite position: No.13. I like tackling.

Any points to prove: I feel all the boys have got that point to prove... feeding off last year (Mabel Park bowed out with two finals’ loses in 2023).

Your favourite other sport:Rugby union.

Biggest larrikin: Probably Jahrel Conlen. He will probably play hooker. He gets the boys up.
