MATCH REPORTS
Intermediate Boys
POOL A: Cavendish Road SHS 3 d Kelvin Grove State College 1
Two goals in two minutes inside the final nine minutes raised Cav Road to premiership glory in the Pool A intermediate boys grand final against Kelvin Grove.
Colompar Raphrael and Daniel Bellas both found the back of the net to turn a match headed for a penalty shoot out into a 3-1 win.
The match was 0-0 and then 1-1 for long periods before the double break through.
Arjan Plaha broke the deadlock in a cut-throat affair just after halftime to give Cavendish Road a 1-0 lead.
There had been nominations for goal of the day earlier on, but there surely had to be only one nomination for save of the day and that came from Cav Road’s Maxwell Pelusi in this match.
Pelusi was at the peak of his powers when he somehow prevented a first half goal which, on 99 occasions out of 100, would have been scored.
But not even Pelusi could prevent Kelvin Grove’s first goal from a penalty after Matt Lee had driven hard into the box on attack.
Earlier, the scoreless first half ebbed and flowed as Liam Davidson came closest to a goal with a shot that slammed off the crossbar.
POOL B: Southport SHS 5 d Cleveland District 2
Southport’s Genki Mashima was sublime in what was surely the game of the finals as the Golod Coast school triumphed.
Mashima’s performance and a booming goal from near halfway by Cleveland’s Hamish Massey were extraordinary aspects of a game where both teams thrilled with end to end football.
Massey’s set shot from a long, long way out flew over the keeper’s head to get his side back into the match.
The remarkable workrate of Mashima was a highlight, with the explosive talent creating chances with his delivery of pass and also his pace and intuition.
Southport’s brilliant team goal leading up to halftime was also noteworthy, with Kai Bertenshaw laying on a ball for Dilan Erdogan who finished off to give the Coast boys a 2-1 advantage.
Lucas Duckett, also dangerous throughout, joined Mashima and Erdogan on the scoresheet before Southport all but secured victory with a goal by substitute Hudson Kissell.
Junior Girls
POOL A: Kelvin Grove State College 7 d Cavendish Road SHS 1
Two goal of the day contenders within the space of four minutes helped launch Kelvin Grove State College to the Pool A junior girls SPL grand final title.
Kelvin Grove SC won 7-1, and led 2-0 after 10 minutes courtesy of two wonderful goals from Mackenzie Lewis and Xiana Ludwig.
Six minutes into the match Lewis hit a sizzling right foot shot from 15-20m out and the ball sailed past the keeper into the top left corner.
Then Ludwig’s one touch, left footed marvel delivered Kelvin Grove a second goal.
Approaching halftime, Ludwig then turned in the box to deliver Kelvin Grove’s third.
Cavendish Road’s Allegra O’Grady then lit up the match with a brilliant individual goal, using her speed from near halfway to put herself into the box where she made no mistake. It was 3-1 on the eve of halftime.
This had come moments after a tremendous, desperate save by Cav Road’s Ivy Ferrar.
Kelvin Grove’s march to the title gathered speed again in the second half when Emma De-Brujin produced a wonderful goal to open the gap to 4-1.
Another three goals followed.
POOL B: Aspley SHS 3 d Albany Creek SHS 0
Two goals in quick succession close to halftime underpinned Aspley triumphant pursuit of the junior girls Pool B title.
Aspley won the northern derby 3-0, with goals by Phoebe Spreadbury and Mikayla Afoa in the shadows of halftime a big moment in the game.
The match was not put to bed until late in the second half when Spreadbury produced again, this time a left foot special from an acute angle to score.
The two goals leading up the halftime were crucial.
Junior boys
POOL A: Palm Beach Currumbin d Chancellor State College on penalties after scores locked at 1-1.
PBC SHS goalkeeper Braxton Young was a sudden death penalty shootout hero as the Reds came from behind to pip Chancellor State College.
Young saved two shots in the shootout, the second in sudden death, to give his side victory.
Oliver Alidenes then stood up to deliver the sudden death winner and the grand final was won after scores were locked 1-1 at fulltime.
PBC were down 1-0 for most of the second half, but with six minutes remaining Archie Matthews - moved from defence to the frontline - guided the ball home.
There had been a series of dramatic moments earlier in the half as PBC SHS closed hard to find the levelling goal, but it came down to Matthews’ position switch late which gave his side an extra physical presence to score.
Earlier, a magnificent strike by Chancellor’s Nathan Kirby on the stroke of halftime broke the deadlock.
The first chance of the match came courtesy of a Chancellor corner kick when Hayden Maine got above the pack to head the ball into the crossbar.
There had also been a half chance a few minutes earlier for Chancellor Taj McKnight had broke away, but a tremendous fullback’s tackle by Oliver Alidenes saved the day.
PBC SHS’s first opportunity came from a crosskick by Nate Auld, but an advancing Cameron Gardiner was ruled offside.
Chancellor keeper Codey Huston was also called upon when PBC’s Solomon Hill fired off a strike.
Sublime keeping by Young then thwarted an advance by Chancellor livewire Zach Kerr, who had latched onto a super pass by Kirby.
POOL B: Cleveland District SHS 2 d Southport SHS 0
Cleveland District turned a dominant first half into a gripping victory.
A first half goal by Bailey Mazzeolo rewarded Cleveland who were the better side, despite a counter attacking threat from Southport.
But a tenacious Southport rallied after halftime, and took the match to the death before Farrell Gordon killed off their challenge with a goal two minutes from time.
Cleveland needed the goal to lift them from beyond the grasp of a Southport outfit which refused to go away.
The second half was even, but Cleveland muscled their way to victory.
