Marsden’s destructive left edge raiders Antonio Okusitino and Benson Tau have provided the necessary firepower to overrun a gallant Redcliffe SHS outfit after the latter jumped their favoured rivals.

There was little between the two in the first half of their entertaining Round 1 match-up, but Marsden was a totally different combination after the break.

Home side Redcliffe landed the first blow through right centre Jake Carsburg, before Marsden took advantage of a string of opposition penalties to score six consecutive tries on their way to a 30-4 win.

Antonio Okusitino crashed over thanks to a clinical Javon Andrews assist, before towering winger Tau followed soon after with a powerful run when he trampled over two defenders.

Marsden big man Emmanuel Asomua landed the dagger moments later, ensuring the imposing Marsden side would be travelling home with two points.

But Redcliffe’s first-half effort showed they are going to give opposition teams plenty of stick this season.

Without Redcliffe Dolphins Academy players Nate Berrigan, Cody Starr and Jairus Halahala manning the pumps in the middle, the Eagles still applied plenty of pressure. Hooker and captain Amare Wynyard was outstanding directing traffic.

There was lots to love, like the kicking game of Grady Payne and Logan Hudson as well as the power game of damaging prop Kaleb Teu.

Marsden will be chomping at the bit to improve on Wednesday’s performance.

It was a great starting point, where exciting fullback Adaquix Luke made a stirring comeback after a disrupted Year 10 and 11 school footy season.

The Dolphins Academy player was nimble as ever on Dolphin Oval, jinking around traffic and evading defenders with the sharpest footwork.

Benji Quinlan, Mace Andrew and Emmauel Asomua also stood out.

WALTER CUP REVIEW

The Marsden Makos returned from an early 10-0 deficit to claim their first scalp of the Walters Cup season, a 16-10 success over a gritty Redcliffe SHS outfit.

Redcliffe started better, before the Marsden boys, with the wind behind them, cashed in on a wealth of possession to scrape home and win by the skin of their teeth.

Marsden’s team this year has an awesome foursome of Kiwi boys from the North Island who have come across the Tasman to test themselves against more quality opposition and get a greater exposure to different players.

Towering twin pairing Grayson Wharakura and brother Nik came across last year where they played Hancock Cup (Year 9) footy with prop Taki Kennedy, who scored the go-ahead try in Wednesday’s thriller on Dolphin Oval.

You couldn’t tell the difference between Grayson (fullback) and Nik (prop).

Both are promising types, 190cm tall give or take a few centimetres and both weighing over 90kgs, with prop Nik 96kgs and as powerful as a Year 10 comes.

Growing up in Hamilton and attending Nga Taiatea Wharekura High School, Grayson was always a fullback and Nik always a prop, with Grayson slightly more agile with plenty of speed.

As you can imagine, it is very expensive feeding them their steaks and chicken.

Mother Tania never has enough food in the house for the pair, who this year played Connell Cup Under-17s for the Brisbane Tigers and will fly home on Thursday alongside game-breaking prop Kennedy and exciting left centre Mairangiatea Walker (Ipswich Jets Connell Cup), who scored a 60m try before leaving the field with a torturous calf cramp.

The four of them will contest the New Zealand Maori Rugby League tournament over the weekend before returning just in time for the side’s round two clash against the Wavell Warriors next Wednesday.

PREVIEW

Round 1 combatants Redcliffe SHS and Marsden SHS will bound into their Langer Trophy opener on Wednesday at Kayo Stadium missing a big gun apiece.

Marsden SHS’s Queensland schoolboy centre Lui Lee (knee) and Redcliffe utility Nate Berrigan (elbow) will miss the opening salvos of the campaign through injury.

Lee is the brother of former Queensland Origin series winning centre Brenko while Berrigan, a mini Rueben Cotter, is the son of Barry Berrigan and nephew of Shaun Berrigan, both decorated former NRL players.

But there will still be plenty of fire power on show from both teams despite the pair missing.

Catch all four first round games LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on the same day, with Redcliffe and Marsden clashing from 4pm.

All eight rounds and finals from the Langer Trophy and the Year 10 Walters Cup will be LIVE STREAMED on KommunityTV in a deal with the NRL and Queensland Secondary Schools Rugby League.

Marsden head coach Krys Freeman can’t wait for the season to get underway.

“We’ve had good success in the past few years in making finals, but we just haven’t been able to go all the way,” he said.

“Obviously everyone is playing to win each week, but realistically we’re looking to manage our games a lot better and have a consistent start to each game.

“Both of those things are key focus points for us and we hope to improve on them as we head into finals.”

The side will be captained by five-eighth Javon Andrews, who is in his second season of the competition, along with standouts Taylan To’a,Mace Andrew and Lui Lee.

“The majority of our side are fresh faces, which is quite exciting and something the players and coaching staff are looking forward to,” Freeman said.

“One player I’m particularly excited to see is Benson Tau, who was a Queensland schoolboys winger a few years ago, but didn’t get the chance to represent Met East this year.

“He’s got a real renewed focus on footy, so I think it’ll be really cool to see how he performs with his opportunity as a specialist winger.”

With players the calibre of recent Dolphins Academy signee Logan Hudson in their line-up, Redcliffe have a solid look about them this year.

Hudson, a five-eighth at heart but capable of playing many positions in the backline, is a player highly respected by his teammates and can fill in anywhere in the Jay Wilkinson-coached side.

In an all-star U17 club side which has won the last two Connell Cup premierships, he was the perfect foil around players like Noah Fien and Carter Welfare.

They qualified for the Langer Trophy in emphatic fashion with a 48-12 win over Mountain Creek SHS after a whirlwind first half.
