On the move: Snake breeding season begins across the Gold Coast

SNAKE breeding season has started later this year with male snakes on the move, seeking out females over the next 10 weeks.
However, experts are warning local pet owners to be extra vigilant as snakes can become volatile towards curious cats and canines when they are on the hunt for a mate.

Locals can expect more activity over the coming weeks during breeding season which usually begins in August but has ramped up this month according to Gold Coast Snake Catcher Tony Harrison.

“What we will get is all the males shaking off the dust and heading off on a mission to find and fight for his mate,” he said.
“In the reptile world, snakes spend 95 per cent of there life trying to get food and not become food, so they are sly and stealthy.
“But during this next 10 weeks that common sense will go out the window, males with a one track mind will travel to find her, day and night and out in the open.”

He said other males would also meet up to fight other males over love rivals.
“We will hear the rumble in our roof spaces, you will see the boys wrestling on your front lawn,” he said.
SNAKE PULLED FROM BEHIND BED IN BURLEIGH
“The sad part is they also get seen by dogs and cats, the cats go to suss it out and dogs go to keep us safe.
“But this is when pet and snake conflicts end badly.
He has prompted pet owners to listen if their dog is barking and to pay attention.
“Don’t ignore your dog barking or the birds going off as they do when they see a snake,” he said.
“If you hear that dull thud followed by a slow sweeping sound in your roof. well you can guess the rest.”
