RUMOURS have swirled on social media after residents of a Gold Coast suburb started getting discoloured water from their taps.
One resident raised concerns “someone has poisoned or hacked our water supply”.
Another linked the milky or cloudy water to cases of elevated uranium levels in water consumed by remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.
The 6000-member strong Tugun Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page has shared photos of the dodgy-looking water, attempting to determine what was happening.
“Hi there, is anyone else’s water (from Tugun) coming out of the tap like this all of the sudden? It’s been fine all day for us but suddenly gone like this (sic),” a resident complained.
The concerns were not limited to the Neighbourhood Watch page.

Another person took to The People United Gold Coast page to find out what was happening.
“Morning everyone. Has anyone in tugun got problems with their tap water this morning or just our family? Our water is super foggy (don't know how else to explain it). Genuinely worried someone has poisoned or hacked our water supply (sic),” they wrote.
Some speculated Gold Coast City Council “dumped a s---load of chemicals in” or that maintenance or major works had been carried out.
The council was asked for more information about the discolouration of water.
A spokeswoman offered a simple explanation.
“Milky or cloudy appearance is usually due to tiny air bubbles in the water,” she said.
“This can occur when air is trapped in the pipes after they have been repaired, and is released by the sudden reduction in pressure with a tap discharging.”
