Radio Ratings: Shock result as ABC beaten by a commercial station

After a sleepless night for Adelaide’s breakfast teams, the first radio ratings of the year are in – and there are some big surprises in the mix.

Triple M’s brekky team Mark Ricciuto, Chris Dittmar and Laura O’Callaghan are kicking goals in the first radio ratings survey for 2023.

In a shock result, they are not only No. 1 on the FM dial, but have pipped ABC Adelaide to the post to be the overall runner-up.

AM station FIVEaa’s David Penberthy and Will Goodings are in top spot with 14.2 share points despite dropping 2.3 since the final survey for 2022.

But Triple M has gained 1.7 share points to finish with 12.9, ahead of AM station ABC Adelaide’s Stacey Lee and Nikolai Beilharz who were in second place last survey, but are now in third spot with 12.5, down 1.1 share points.

It’s a huge win for Triple M because FIVEaa and ABC Adelaide are always in the two top spots, taking turns at being No. 1.

All three stations did not change their 2022 line-ups this year.

Injecting new blood has failed to revive Mix 102.3’s Ali Clarke Breakfast Show.

Channel 10 sports presenter Max Burford – who recently tied the knot with Eliza Hodgson – joined Ali Clarke on the show at the start of the year.

Shane Lowe and Eddie Bannon stayed, while AFLW star Erin Phillips – who had been making guest appearances – left for good.

At the end of 2022, the Ali Clarke Breakfast Show had its first rankings rise in months to finish the year in fifth spot.

But in the first survey for 2023, Mix is in sixth spot with 8.5 share points, after dipping 0.5.

Nova 919 and 107.1 SAFM also had new breakfast crews with former Mix 102.3 brekky co-hosts Jodie Oddy and Mark “Soda” Soderstrom in their respective teams.

Nova 919 has an early breakfast show with Ben Harvey, Liam Stapleton and Belle Jackson, which is recorded in Melbourne and runs from 6am to 7am. It’s followed by an Adelaide-based show hosted by Oddy and station newcomer Andrew Hayes.

That combination has paid off: Nova is in fourth place overall on 11.7 share points, after a 2.4 rise – the highest of all the stations.

SAFM’s Bec and Soda have finished in fifth spot with 10.3, following a 1.9 gain.

The radio ratings results ladder is based on share points which are calculated by taking into account the number of people tuning in for at least eight minutes within a 15-minute timeslot, which is also known as “cume” or cumulative audience, and the time they spend listening.

In terms of cume, Nova was the most popular in the breakfast timeslot with an audience of 189,000, followed by SAFM on 172,000, Mix on 159,000 and Triple M on 139,000.

Despite the disappointing brekky result, Mix 102.3 is Adelaide’s No. 1 station with 12.3 share points. Nova is hot on its heels with 12.1, followed by Triple M (10.7), SAFM (10.1), FIVEaa (9.2), Cruise 1323 (9.1) and ABC Adelaide (8.1).
