Schoolies 2022: Balcony hopping schoolies evicted from hotels as police warn of crack down

Balcony hoppers are being warned they will be kicked out of Schoolies if they are caught performing the dangerous stunt.

Schoolies week begins on the Gold Coast

Balcony hoppers are being warned they will be kicked out of Schoolies if they are caught performing the dangerous stunt.

Police say at least two groups have already been evicted from their accommodation.

At the same time police have slammed ‘toolies’ for their bad behaviour ruining the annual school leavers festival.

Police arrested 67 people on 87 charges in the Schoolies precinct in the past three nights with only 18 of those people being official school leavers.

The rest were adults.

Gold Coast police Superintendent Rhys Wildman said Schoolies on the main were behaving themselves but it was toolies – adults at the Schoolies precinct – who were ruining the fun.

“If you are misbehaving, you’re picking a very, very bad time to do so,” Supt Wildman warned

“We have police everywhere.”

He said a majority of the charges laid were for public order offences.

Police also issued 53 infringement notices and only 18 of those to Schoolies.

Supt Wildman said that some Schoolies had already been evicted due to balcony hopping.

“We cannot stress enough to our school leavers the danger of conducting this particular activity,” he said.

“Do not jump from one balcony to another in our unit complexes.”

He said accommodation providers would be taking a hard stance on balcony hoppers

Police will also investigate – including using CCTV – if they hear reports of the practice.

Supt Wildman said police had also found three knives as a part of their metals detector trial.

Those knives – including a flick knife – were found on adults in Broadbeach.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations provider Justin Payne said paramedics had treated 130 people in their emergency treatment centre only 10 of those were taken to hospital.

“By far and large, the most presentations we are seeing is still alcohol related,” he said.

He said the heatwave conditions were a concern.

“We believe that Schoolies may be replacing water when alcohol,” he said.

“Please drink plenty of water and alcohol is not a viable alternative.”

About 17,000 Schoolies have picked up their office wrist bands.

The festival is continuing tonight but Tuesday has been flagged as a quiet night with live shows and a silent disco.
