Nerang man dies after being struck down by a ute in Burleigh Heads

A man has died while walking down a southern Gold Coast road in a tragic start to the week. Find out more.

A ute driver went home after fatally hitting a pedestrian on a southern Gold Coast road before calling emergency services and coming back.

The 41-year-old Nerang man was walking along Reedy Creek Rd near Mattocks Rd when he was struck by a ute at about 11pm on Sunday.

He died at the scene.

The ute’s driver a 30-year-old Burleigh Waters man is assisting police.

His ute has been seized for forensic examination.

Gold Coast police Superintendent Rhys Wildman said: “We are still working through what unfolded last night.”

Supt Wildman said the driver went to his nearby home before calling emergency services and returning.

“The exact circumstances as to why the male was on the road, how the collision occurred and for the male to leave and return are all under investigation.”

On Monday morning, a number of yellow spray paint marks from police investigations were still visible on the side of the road.

Police are calling for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam in the area to come forward.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

The crash come less than a month after UK tourist John Cunningham died after being struck down by a car in Biggera Waters.
