TWO teens have been charged after leading police across the Gold Coast, to the state border before being caught in Surfers Paradise in a stolen car.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the stolen vehicle, a white Subaru, was spotted on Southport Nerang Road near Ashmore where the police helicopter began tracking it at 7.45pm Sunday evening.

It is alleged the car was stolen from a Bilinga property on Sunday morning.

The car was followed by the helicopter to the New South Wales border, which it crossed around 9pm and back up to Southport along the Gold Coast Highway.

The spokeswoman said police in Southport were able to lay out tyre spikes to slow down the vehicle.

Gold Coast police Superintendent Rhys Wildman said police on the ground intervened when the helicopter observed the driving becoming “quite dangerous”.

The teens did not stop until Surfers Paradise where they were surrounded by police on the Gold Coast Highway just south of the Isle of Capri at 9.50pm.

“Our intention was to make sure that vehicle never came near our school leavers,” Supt Wildman said.

A witness to the arrest said there was significant commotion.

“I heard a bang when they mounted the kerb,” they told the Bulletin.

A 16-year-old Runaway Bay boy has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle and driving without a licence.

A 15-year-old Peranga boy has been charged with one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Both boys are expected to appear before Southport Children’s Court.

Investigations are ongoing.

Supt Wildman urged the community to remember they played a vital role when it came to reducing the number of vehicle thefts.

“Vehicles to be stolen now you need the keys,” he said.

“To get the keys you have to have access to the keys so that means people are entering houses.”

Supt Wildman urged people to ensure their doors and windows were locked, even if they were home.

He said in recent months police had seen a reduction in the number of car thefts.
