Langer Trophy: Ipswich SHS v Redcliffe SHS:

Ipswich have done a demolition job on Redcliffe this Wednesday night to make it three-from-three to start their Langer Trophy campaign.

With some stars out and new faces in, Ipswich SHS showed the depth of their rugby league talent with a 46-6 massacre of Redcliffe SHS at Dolphin Stadium.

Ipswich rushed out to a mammoth 30-0 lead after a first half butchering of Redcliffe SHS.

They came out firing. There was no stopping the bleeding as the boys from Ipswich kept finding new ways to tear Redcliffe’s defence apart.

It started with a strong run from lock Nick Torrens to get his side on the board, before the whole team joined in.

Strapping centre Caleb Jackson could not be stopped from close range for their second. Jackson had the ball in hand moments later, and found an excited Tommy Luhrman in support on his inside.

Luhrman was delighted once again when wing Anton Naiyep charged through Redcliffe’s defensive line and linked with him to give him his second consecutive four-pointer.

Ipswich had ballooned out to a 20-point-lead before Torrens scored the fastest try you have ever seen. Off the kick-off Torrens scooped up the Steden and ran 60m untouched.

To finish off a spectacular first-30, the debutant Joven Gyemore managed to dive in to score down the left edge. Crisp handling from James Frazer, Jalen Afamasaga, Tyler Peckham-Harris and Anton Naiyep found the No.5 in what looked like a training drill.

Ipswich wing Kulu Baruani opened the scoring early into the second half with a spectacular high-flying leap to catch and convert a pin-point crossfield kick from Frazer.

Finally the Redcliffe supporters had something to cheer about when centre Julian Mirupasi maneuvered his way in to score.

Ipswich No.14 Jacobi Shaw went one better to extend his team’s lead at 40-6. Peckham-Harris put up a bomb and Shaw took a freakish catch that was highly contested.

Naiyep made it 46-6 with Ipswich’s second try immediately off the kick-off. With a jaw-dropping 65m dash Naiyep raced away after breaking the ankles of the Redcliffe fullback.

Naiyep was the last to score before the full-time whistle put Redcliffe out of their misery.

REPLAY: Caloundra v Ipswich in the Walters Cup

Although Ipswich SHS were the first to get on the scoreboard, the Caloundra Seahawks pulled away 28-6 to triumph in a second-half blowout.

While Ipswich fought valiantly, Caloundra capitalised on their exhaustion, scoring six tries to Ipswich’s one.

Lock Carlos Bagon strolled over for Ipswich with his second touch in the game with Mafiou Cherie straightening the attack and finding him in space. 6-0.

Caloundra fullback Toby Irvine equalised the scores with a swift backline move. The move, “Panther”, saw the Ipswich defence open up for him to slice right through.

Second rower Zac Garton was next to score for Caloundra which to give them a 10-6 going into the break. Following some hard work advancing the ball, cracking runs into contact and brute force to tire Ipswich’s defence, he was rewarded.

Halfback Caiden Ahsee pushed Caloundra ahead even further when scoring a cracking try down the left edge. Garton did all the hard work as he had been doing all game.

Palming off defenders and creating try opportunities. 14-6.

Irvine secured his double with a fantastic finish down the right edge, before Ahsee thought to make it two aswell. The young No.7 dived in under the posts to pile more pain onto Ipswich.

Ahsee didn’t stop there. He wanted three and he got it. He ran the distance of the field in the dying minutes to top-off a superb performance, Caloundra winning 28-6.

Langer Trophy Preview:

An exciting young winger will make his Langer Trophy debut for Ipswich SHS while Redcliffe SHS will continue to build on its recovery in elite schoolboy rugby league action today.

Joven Gyemore, a student from Cherbourg, has been named in his first match for Ipswich SHS who are two wins from two matches this season.

Gyemore is a South Burnett 100m athletics champion, so look out if he gets some space.

“He has come in and is doing some great things,’’ said Ipswich SHS coach Joshua Bretherton.

Redcliffe SHS fell on their face in game one against Mabel Park SHS, but fought back strongly in round 2 against PBC SHS, losing just 28-10.

The Redcliffe players will be playing its first match at Dolphin Oval and will enjoy playing at home.
