Samuel Snelling: Batehaven man refused bail, charged with assaulting officer

A man has found himself behind bars on remand after he allegedly assaulted multiple police officers - including throwing a lit ciggie at one officer’s face - on the state’s south coast.

The altercation between Snelling and officers took place at a unit on Beach Rd, Batehaven.

A man has found himself behind bars on remand after he allegedly punched a police officer in the head and flicked a lit cigarette in another officer’s face during an altercation on the state’s south.

Samuel Snelling was refused bail in Batemans Bay Local Court on Thursday and will remain in custody after he allegedly assaulted two police officers in Batehaven just before 6pm on Wednesday.

Officers attended a unit on Beach Rd, Batehaven, after reports of a domestic related incident.

On arrival, the officers were greeted by 24-year-old Snelling, who confronted them.

Following a verbal altercation, Snelling allegedly flicked a lit cigarette in the face of a senior constable.

Samuel Snelling was refused bail in Batemans Bay Local Court on Thursday, after he allegedly punched a police officer.

Officers have then attempted to arrest Snelling, who allegedly punched a second senior constable in the face, knocking him to the ground. A struggle ensued with OC spray deployed before the man fled.

Police caught the man later last night and conveyed him to the Batemans Bay police station, where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

Snelling will appear in the Batemans Bay Local Court on July 10. He remains remanded in custody.
