A P-plater caught driving with weed in his system multiple times, informed police he smoked dope “mostly every night” during an RBT.

Dyllan Campbell, who has smoked dope since he was 10, was pulled over by police once last year and twice this year, each time having cannabis detected in his oral fluid the Nowra Local Court heard on Tuesday.

The offences saw the 20-year-old, who moves motorhomes for Jayco, wind up in the court where he pleaded guilty to three counts of drive with illicit drug present in oral fluid.

Police documents tendered to the court reveal the P-plater was pulled over each time in South Nowra on the Princes Hwy.

Campbell was first pulled over on the highway for random breath tests on September 29 2022, then again on January 11 2023 and July 12 2023. Each time, he had cannabis in his system.

On the third occasion, officers who pulled the young man over asked when he had smoked the drug.

“At home, last night, through a joint,” agreed facts reveal he replied. “I smoke it mostly every night.”

In Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, Campbell’s lawyer John Seet said his client had been taking steps since his third offence to “get off the drugs”.

“He has been sober for a month now,” he said.

Mr Seet asked Magistrate Lisa Viney if an interlock device could be installed in Campbell’s vehicle as way of punishment, however, Ms Viney said such a device didn’t exist for cannabis.

Ms Viney did however recognise the lack of recent smoking Campbell had indulged in.

“These offences clearly stem from an addiction to cannabis,” she said. “You have been sober for more than a month now, so you’re doing a really good job not smoking it.”

Despite the praise, Ms Viney still had to punish the P-plater for the multiple offences.

Campbell was convicted, fined a total of $1800 and had his licence disqualified for six months.
