“I just got a lot of voices in my head” were the words of a man armed with a molotov cocktail and a plan to firebomb Nowra police station, shortly after his destructive scheme was foiled by police.

This wasn’t the first time 30-year-old Drew Field had planned to damage the police station by such violent means, with Nowra Local Court told on Tuesday he had done so only last year and was on parole for the offence when he attempted to do it again.

The plan to throw a molotov cocktail into the police station, saw Field plead guilty in court to armed with intent to commit indictable offence.

Police documents reveal how the man was caught on the morning of March 10 by police patrolling East Nowra.

Officers discovered a man “loitering” around the Mobil Service Station on Kalandar St and, on further inspection, noted the man was holding a 700ml liquor bottle with a rag poking out the top.

“Police were immediately concerned as police were aware of the (Field’s) history with Molotov cocktails,” agreed facts state.

As the officers parked at the service station, they watched as Field used the e10 pump to douse the rag with fuel, prompting the police to immediately restrain him.

After dropping the bottle due to the restraint, Field informed the officers of the voices in his head.

Police asked Field what his intentions were, to which he said: “To throw a molotov into the Nowra police station”.

The court heard on January 15 last year Field set alight an object and threw it into the police station.

“This object hit the station handrail and erupted into a fireball, causing its flammable contents to burn and cause damage to the walls and floor,” agreed facts state.

Field was jailed for the offence in early 2022 with the sentence to expire on July 14 2023, but was released early on parole.

Field appeared in Nowra Local Court on Tuesday via video link, as he has since been returned to custody in the Lithgow Correctional Centre.

His lawyer Hannah Dreher asked the court to adjourn the matter to complete a sentencing assessment report (SAR), which Magistrate Lisa Viney did not oppose.

Field will return to Nowra Local Court on August 15 for sentencing.
