A south coast businessman who died in a freak accident while playing golf in the seaside town of Mollymook has been remembered as a “great friend” who’d do anything for anyone.

Craig Bury died at Mollymook Golf Club on Thursday afternoon, after a tree branch fell on his head while on the golf course.

Two ambulance crews arrived on the scene just before 3pm to find Mr Bury with injuries that were described as critical.

Paramedics performed CPR on Mr Bury, who had been golfing with three of his mates, however he died at the scene.

A work colleague, who did not wish to be named, said Mr Bury founded the Smeaton Grange-based company Aussie Weighbridge Systems in Macarthur in the 1990s, and described him as “more like a friend than a work colleague”.

“I feel bad for his wife and kids, his whole family,” he said. “He was a really good friend and he will be well missed in the industry.

“Craig would do anything for you. He was a really good guy.”

Witnesses said Mr Bury’s playing partners tried to revive him before paramedics arrived.

A keen golfer, the colleague said Mr Bury played the Mollymook course without fail each Thursday.

“I’ve known him for five or six years, and I’ve even played with him on the same golf course,” he said.

On Thursday, paramedics described Mr Bury’s death as a “freak accident.”

“It appears the man was out for a day of golf with his mates when the freak incident occurred,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Faye Stockman said.

She said bystanders had attempted to resuscitate Mr Bury but he could not be saved because of the severity of his injuries.

“Unfortunately the man suffered a significant head injury and went into traumatic cardiac arrest and died at the scene.”

On Thursday evening, Mollymook Golf Club issued a statement to members, offering its sincere condolences to Mr Bury’s family.

“It is with heartfelt sympathy we wish to advise that tragically on (Thursday) afternoon one of our members was fatally injured by a falling tree branch while playing on the club’s Hilltop Golf Course,” the messages read.

“We wish to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the man’s family and loved ones, as well as to the players and club employees who were with him at the time of the accident.”

The club made clear to members it was co-operating with the relevant authorities and would be closed on Friday.

Tributes for Mr Bury began to flow on social media with one woman describing him as a “lovely, lovely man”, and another saying he was a “true gentleman”.
