EVER since Yinka Sunmola began following his footballer dad Ola around the yard kicking the ball, he has shown signs of having a competitive streak.
Now 14 years, Yinka — full name Oliyinka — is fast settling into his role as a quality winger for the Western Sydney Wanderers under-14 team and even scoring regular goals.
The 178cm tall Yinka has had top coaching and training at his previous clubs, Kellyville Kolts and Marconi Stallions before being signed by the Wanderers for their first under-14 team.
This week’s Junior Sports Star nominee has a quick turn of foot and is able to both set up goal opportunities for his strikers and score himself.
“My highlight (this season) was scoring a hat-trick against McArthur Rams,” said Yinka, who has been on a football tour to Spain.
“It was my first hat-trick for the Wanderers and it made me realise that I am gradually becoming a better footballer and with more focus and determination, maybe I could become an even better footballer in the years to come.
”My main goals this year are to become a better footballer, score more goals than I did last year, earn the respect of my teammates and coaches as a footballer.”
Yinka’s dad Ola used to play football back in his native Nigeria which is famous for producing world class players.
