AFTER six years of competitive go karting and five championships, Tyson Williams felt he needed a new challenge.

The Rouse Hill local choose Speedway Legends Car series and within two months the young speed tyro has won the inaugural South Australian Legend Car Championship in Adelaide and three podium finishes, even seeing off much more experienced drivers.

Tyson is this week’s Junior Sports Star nominee and if he continues his momentum, he could soon be vying with more experienced drivers for the national championships.

“I had competing in go karts for six years and won many titles but I needed a change when I turned 16 as there was not much else in karting after that,” said the 16-year-old Tyson.

“I chose speedway and it’s actually cheaper to compete in than karting.

“Winning the state open title in Adelaide during the Easter Sunday weekend was great because it was my first big win in this sport.

Adding to his achievement in South Australia was that Tyson — who also smashed the track record in the preliminaries — came from behind to beat veteran driver and pole sitter Robbie Rawlings.

Rawlings had to settle for second spot in the 25-lap event after being passed by Williams, the youngest competitor at the track.

The Rouse Hill High School student also won the three-track series held at Mildura, Murray Bridge and Adelaide, underlining his tremendous potential.

“I can’t believe I actually won,” Williams said after the win, “The track was good, I really enjoyed it out there.”

Speedway legends cars are powered by motorcycle engines with organisers saying since all vehicles are virtually identical, there is a competitive and level playing field.

Titles: Inaugural South Australian Legend Car Championship; Murray Bridge Speedway;

Adelaide Speedway City; Innex Semi Pro Easter Trail.
