NORTH Sydney is ready to party.
Residents will be disco dancing in the laneways, dancing to the beat at St Leonards Park and making beautiful music with the Mash Machine.
To celebrate the arrival of spring, North Sydney Council is staging Sounds of September, a month-long program of events and musical performances.
The month will kick off with a Backstreet Block Party next Thursday and Friday, September 1 and 2, when the quiet, historical laneway of Napier St will be transformed into a disco party.
For the first time, members of the public will be able to try out the Mash Machine, interactive music boards that lets up to four players at a time change the bass, drums and melody of a tune by shifting blocks across a screen.
“It a truly social game that turns ordinary people into DJs in minutes,” said Music Mash director Chad Davis.
“It’s fun, clever and there’s something really cool about the technology.
There will also be a silent disco at the Backstreet Block Party where you can grab a set of headphones and dance the night away.
The party will be staged between 3pm and 9pm on both days, plus there will be free arcade games, a pop-up garden bar, food trucks and a digital street canvas.
Artist Zeke’s Lunchbox will use glow paints to create a large artwork between 3pm and 9pm on Friday, while artists Mike Watt and Sindy Sinn will engage in artists battle on a large canvas between 4pm to 8pm on Friday.
Another highlight of Sounds of September will be the Live @ St Leonards Park, a free community musical festival on September 25.
The festival will feature live bands including High Street Fluke, That Red Head and the Sydney Jazz Collective.
Other highlights will include an exhibition of visual media at The Ripple Effect Gallery in North Sydney.
