1st Mosman 1908 Scout Group will survive after the Mosman Daily encouraged new leaders to volunteer

THE oldest scout group in Australia had a leadership crisis, but the local paper, which has featured stories on the group over the years, did one more and the result has saved it from certain closure.

FIRST Mosman 1908 Scout Group has a bright future thanks to the Mosman Daily, which encouraged new leaders to volunteer and save the group from closure.

We reported last month that the group had been granted a reprieve after its cub leader agreed to stay on for a further school term.

New scout leader Simone Haider of Ryde had earlier stepped forward after our first article in June.

Now Mosman fathers Rufus Harding and Marcus Hebblethwaite, who both have children in scouts, have become cub leaders.

Last Saturday in the Barn about 45 people farewelled outgoing cub leader Jane Coulcher and welcomed the new members.

Scout group chairwoman Colleen Godsell thanked the Daily for being the group’s “lifeline to the wider community”.

“Without the ongoing support from the Daily the 1st Mosman 1908 Scout Group would not exist,” she said.

“From as far back as 1927 the Daily has run regular feature articles that highlight not only the struggles of the group at the time, but also its successes.

“I for one have come to depend on the Daily’s generosity of community spirit and support.”

Miss Haider has been involved with scouts since childhood and first became a leader when she was 18.

She has volunteered frequently through scouts and gained life skills and experience.

“My favourite part of being a leader is watching the youth develop over the time they are in the troop,” she said.

Mr Harding said scouting was important to him and his family.

“It presents opportunities to expand the skills and thinking outside of a controlled environment that so many young boys and girls are lacking,” he said.
