Former bowling club nestled under Sydney Harbour Bridge shopped around for ‘unique commercial opportunity’

IT’S a former bowls club but genuine 1970s prices probably won’t be available in its new life. Will a ritzy new restaurant move into a prime parkside location underneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

A PRIME slice of Milson’s Point heritage real estate which has been a bowls club and community centre, is set to be turned into “unique commercial opportunities”, including cafes and restaurants.

The former bowls club building in Bradfield Park is up for tender after a lease with the Kirribilli Centre ran out and by mutual agreement with North Sydney Council was not renewed.

The original building began life as the Gallipoli Legion Bowling Club in the early 1950s and later became known as the Kirribilli Ex-Servicemen’s Bowling Club until it closed in July 2001 because of a drop in members and visitors. The council at the time built two bowling greens and the club house.

In August 2002, Council voted to refit the building so it could accommodate two tenancies — one commercial and one community-based.

The commercial side was leased to a restaurant while the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre operated community-based activities in the other side of the building until its lease expired in June this year.

The space will no longer be used as a community centre.

The decision to lease the building commercially has upset some of the groups who have been using the community centre, but North Sydney Council sees plenty of potential in the property sitting in a rare slice of parkland bounded by the Harbour Bridge and apartment blocks next to Luna Park.

“The premises ... have the potential of being transformed into any number of unique commercial opportunities that would best serve the local community and all those who visit or work in the area,” says council advertising material.

Expressions of interest can be lodged after downloading documents at www.tenderlink.com.nsc and the closing date is August 31.
