Sydney Metro Southwest extension planning underway

Planning is underway for the Sydney Metro Southwest extension from Bankstown to Liverpool, which is set to be a game changer for southwest Sydney commuters in years to come.

Ambitious new projects and upgrades are being planned to improve public transport in Liverpool, but it will be years before commuters reap the benefits.

One of the major transport projects set to be a game changer for Liverpool residents is the extension of the Sydney Metro Southwest from Bankstown, an election commitment made by the NSW Government earlier this year.

A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said the government was working hard to deliver an integrated transport system that met the needs of customers now and in the future.

“The NSW Government’s Future Transport 2056 strategy identifies the government’s 40-year vision for integrated transport and land-use planning to meet the demands of the growing population in NSW, including Liverpool.

“In line with the NSW Government’s election commitment, Sydney Metro is currently undertaking planning work to inform the delivery of an extension of Sydney Metro City and Southwest from Bankstown to Liverpool.”

Planning will take place over the next four years, building on preliminary investigations undertaken in 2016.

There are no costings yet for the project and the timing of its delivery will be made public when planning is completed and the findings have been considered by the government.

In April, Liverpool councillor Tony Hadchiti said the metro extension would ideally be underground.

Work has begun on converting the T3 Bankstown Line for the Metro Southwest project, which will provide services every four minutes during peak when it opens in 2024.

Liverpool has attracted an unprecedented level of investment since the announcement of the Western Sydney International Airport.

Despite this, findings from The Pulse of Greater Sydney report, released last month by the Greater Sydney Commission, show the Western City District — which includes Liverpool — had the lowest capability for 30-minute access to a metropolitan or strategic centre using current infrastructure and services.

The latest Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey also revealed a 17 per cent increase in the average daily commuting time for Sydneysiders, rising to 71 minutes in 2017.

Western Sydney Business Chamber executive director David Borger said the extension of the Southwest Metro to Liverpool, the North-South Rail Link through the new Western Sydney Airport to Macarthur, and the future extension of the West Metro to the Airport were key public transport projects for western Sydney.

“If we want to see a meaningful cut in the amount of time families from western Sydney are spending in an increasingly slower commute to work, the NSW Government needs to continue to turbocharge its investment in public transport,” he said.
