Labor MP Anne Stanley: public transport and roads need urgent fix
Western Sydney is falling behind when it comes to access to public transport and local roads, with a Greater Sydney Commission report revealing it has the lowest capability for 30-minute access to major hubs.
Public transport and local roads need an urgent fix, with Liverpool residents struggling daily to catch public transport and beat congestion, Labor MP Anne Stanley said.
As Western Sydney Airport and its expected regional benefits continue to dominate headlines, Ms Stanley said state and federal governments had failed to address current infrastructure issues.
Findings from The Pulse of Greater Sydney, a report released last week by the Greater Sydney Commission, show the Western City District — which includes Liverpool — had the lowest capability for 30-minute access to a metropolitan or strategic centre using current infrastructure and services.
“While so much talk has been done about how great Western Sydney Airport will be for this region, 16 per cent of western Sydney residents still can’t access major hubs within 30 minutes, compared to just five per cent in most other parts of Sydney,” Ms Stanley said.
“Every single day, residents of western Sydney are finding it harder and harder to access public transport to beat the increased tolls and traffic jams on our roads.”
Ms Stanley said commuters still faced a carparking shortage at Edmondson Park train station. “Even on the odd occasion that they can (park), the trains still run late three of five evenings a week during peak.”
The report also highlighted uneven jobs growth across Sydney between 2006 and 2016, with just 57 per cent of residents in the west living and working within their district.
