The promised extension of the Sydney Metro from Bankstown to Liverpool would ideally be underground, Liverpool councillor Tony Hadchiti says.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian last month committed to extending the Metro Southwest to Liverpool as one of her key election promises.
The return of the Coalition government means early planning work on the project will begin in the next four years.
Cr Hadchiti said Liverpool Council had worked hard to push for the extension of the Metro Southwest, and residents would benefit from more frequent train services and improved travel times.
Cr Hadchiti said it was now council’s job to “push hard, lobby and hold the government to account” over its promises.
He told the Leader it would be “ideal” to have the Metro extension built underground and “reserve the land on top for whatever the current uses are”.
“One would think, and I’m no expert here … that the Bankstown to Liverpool (extension) would be underground given the land that it would require, but any planning decisions you have to look at the whole area,” he said.
In a letter addressed to Liverpool Council, Liverpool state Labor MP Paul Lynch advised he did not support the Metro and the “further proliferation” of high-rise development that could result if it was extended.
Cr Hadchiti said the council was reviewing its LEP and there was “no appetite for upzoning anywhere between Liverpool and our boundary with Bankstown”.
