SYDNEY is gearing up for one of its biggest ever celebrations of volunteering and random acts of kindness this Wednesday for DoSomething Day.
For 24 hours on June 15, we encourage everyone to make an extra effort to do something positive in their local area, however large or small.
Getting involved is really easy. We’re asking volunteers and locals to upload photos and videos of their act of giving or volunteering using the hashtag #DoSomethingDay
The key aim of these photos is to celebrate the wonderful things that people do — and we also want to encourage more people to volunteer.
Around the city on the day, there will be scores of events and activities taking place where local clubs, charities and individuals get into the spirit of giving.
In Martin Place, a group of DoSomething Day “angels” will be performing good deeds for people as they pass by such as helping them up the stairs, carrying their bags or buying them a coffee.
In the north west, volunteers from the Castle Hill RSL will be pitching in to help with the gardening at a working bee for Tallowood School for kids with special needs in the morning. The team is hoping to get enough people down to finish their retaining wall, paint some tables and plant a garden bed.
At Blacktown, local hero and all-round top bloke Harold Becker from the Blacktown Workers Club will be doing what he normally does — helping out his mates.
Harry’s way of doing something positive is by visiting fellow senior citizens who are in hospital, nursing homes or retirement villages just to be a friendly and familiar face.
Volunteers from Youth Off the Streets will be collecting the pies from the big pie bake-off at St John’s Park on Tuesday and delivering them to homeless people in Fairfield and the CBD.
Master Chef champions Sammy and Bella got into the spirit of the day and put all their positive vibes into the pies they baked for a good cause.
At the Bankstown Sports Club it will be as easy as going to see a movie to get into the spirit on the day.
The club is running a movie marathon on DoSomething Day to raise money for charity and will be screening new releases flicks including Mother’s Day and Zootopia.
Another simple way to take part is by stopping by Canterbury Leagues Club to drop off any unwanted winter clothes you might have for their charity appeal.
But probably the easiest way to take part is to simply capture the good deeds you do in a normal day such as helping a friend or neighbour and upload a photo using #DoSomethingDay or #Giveyourbest
Launched by NewsLocal newspapers, the DoSomething charity and Your Local Club, it is about encouraging everybody to do something positive in their communities.
It might be helping an older person with their shopping, buying a homeless person a cup of coffee or a meal, picking up rubbish in the park or mowing an ill neighbour’s lawn.
Big or small, it doesn’t matter. As long as it improves the community or makes a positive difference to someone else’s life, we want to celebrate it.
