Food is a love language that everyone can understand — just ask My Kitchen Rules alumni Sammy and Bella Jakubiak.
The sisters, who are already prepping for the first NewsLocal DoSomething Day, are the first to admit that a home-cooked meal is as good as a hug, and goes a long way to make people feel appreciated.
“I think that people forget that charity starts at home, and one of the best things that you can do that makes everyone happy — which is why we do what we do for a living — is to feed people,” Bella said.
While the act can be so simple, you can taste love in food, she said.
Cooking for others is a practical way to show you care, and brings as much joy to the giver as to the receiver, Sammy said.
“People can get so consumed in everyday life and sometimes it’s all about buying that next car or dress or whatever but the pleasure you get from doing something for someone else is priceless really,” she said.

For those who aren’t quite as skilled in the kitchen as the talented foodies, simple acts of kindness for those around you can make all the difference.
“Food is always number one, it doesn’t have to be crazy complicated, it could just be buying someone a coffee at work in the morning ... surprising them and letting them know that you care and you remembered them,” Bella said.
Even sending an encouraging text message can “mean the world to someone on a bad day,” Sammy said.
“It’s just that little bit extra awareness about going on (with) the people around you,” she said.
Sammy and Bella will be putting their good thoughts into action on DoSomething Day on Wednesday, June 15, baking some “humble pie” to show they care.
The day will be Australia’s biggest ever celebration of volunteering and random acts of kindness.
Miss Universe Monika Radulovic gets behind DoSomething Day
Launched by NewsLocal newspapers, the DoSomething charity and Your Local Club, it aims to encourage everybody to pitch in and do something positive in their community.
The pair will be heading out to St John’s Park Bowling Club in the morning to do exactly this, helping to create hundreds of pies.
“(Pie) is not a quick dish, it’s something you need to put a bit of time and effort into,” Sammy said, and represents that “someone’s actually put a lot of effort and love into that and time and means that you know it’s come from a place of care and it is humbling.”
“It feels like a big warm hug, I think pies always do,” Bella said.
Supported by NewsLocal, the DoSomething charity and ClubsNSW’s Your Local Club campaign, DoSomething Day is about making a positive difference.
To take part on the day, do something kind for a stranger or volunteer with a charity of your choice and share it on social media with #dosomethingday or #giveyourbest.
