PREMIER Mike Baird has thrown his support behind NewsLocal’s DoSomething Day, championing it for bringing communities together and shining the light on the great work of volunteers.

DoSomething Day on Wednesday, June 15 is a national day to celebrate volunteering in all its forms.

Launched by NewsLocal newspapers, the DoSomething charity and Your Local Club, it urges everybody to do something positive.

Mr Baird said he hadn’t quite decided how he would spend the day, but said it would likely involve some volunteering of his own.

He said: “Volunteering is what brings communities together.”

“My main point will be to encourage as manly people as I can, and thank the many volunteers that are in my community and across the state — like those at the Manly Community Centre,” he said.

“While the rest of us are going about our daily lives, here at the Manly Community Centre we have volunteers that are helping victims of domestic violence, homelessness, mental illness, those vulnerable in our community,” he said.

“There are volunteers that come here, and give their best to support those that are in need.”

Mr Baird said the campaign was important as it helped to raise awareness about the work volunteers do.

“It raises awareness, it is a challenge to everyone to understand that there are so many organisations in your community.

“Why not give an hour or two a week, help your community, help organisations ... give them a go. Every single community will be stronger on the back of people volunteering.
