DoSomething Day: Donate to the winter clothing appeal held by Canterbury League Club and distributed by Maronites on Mission

YOUR unwanted woollies can help keep someone less fortunate warm this winter - just bring them along to Canterbury League Club.

Maronites on Mission food co-ordinator and volunteer Sharon Boulos has seen first-hand what life is like for the less fortunate, which is why she and fellow volunteers generously donate their time and energy into helping the homeless.

“You think you know but when you actually go down to the city and see how they live and how they are it’s a real eye-opener, she said.

The organisation has partnered with Canterbury League Club to participate in DoSomething Day on June 15 — Australia’s biggest ever celebration of volunteering and random acts of kindness.

The club is holding a winter clothing appeal and the group will distribute blankets, pillows and beanies to the homeless.

“I think out of all the charities we do, anything to do with the homeless really resonates,” said Canterbury League Club chief executive Dave Brace.

Bankstown Sports Club will hold a series of movie screenings to raise funds for three charities.

Mother’s Day will screen at The Theatre from 10.30am to raise money for the Dandelion Support Network.

Eye in the Sky will play from 1pm to raise money for the Salvation Army.

And Whisky Tango Foxtrot will play from 7.30pm to raise money for Step Ahead.

Tickets will cost $7.50 for adults and $2.50 for children, with all money directed to the charities.

Bankstown Sports Club chief executive Mark Condi said: “We feel this is a great way for the community to get involved and support local charities whilst partaking in a great social activity they will enjoy – catching a movie.”

Readers are encouraged to get involved by performing an act of kindness or volunteering.
