The pastry kitchen at the Shangri-La Hotel is abuzz with activity and filled with the smell of “humble pies” baking under the direction of MasterChef star and headchef Anna Polyviou for DoSomething Day.
The pastry queen and her team are creating dozens of apple and rhubarb crumble tarts for the inaugural day of kindness today for food charity OzHarvest to hand out in Martin Place.
The talented foodie is passionate about spreading the kindness — especially today.
Launched by NewsLocal newspapers and the DoSomething charity and sponsored by Your Local Club, it aims to encourage everybody to pitch in and do something positive in their community.
Polyviou said it was important for her and her team to do something practical to spread the important message of loving others.

“(Doing this is) about being humble — humble pie. Everyone loves pies because it reminds us of our childhood and (it’s) warming,” she said.
“I want (my team) to understand it is about giving but you don’t necessarily have to give a product, you can do something nice or compliment people, it’s just really important,” Polyviou said.
From making someone a cup of tea or paying for a coffee for the person behind you, there are so many ways to do something, she said.
“It doesn’t have to be today, but I think it’s good to do it today to raise awareness,” Polyviou said.
