A Banora Point man has been jailed after threatening to kill Q+A staff.

A northern NSW man threatened to kill Q+A staff over the show’s support of the LGBT community.

David William Wonnocott, 47, of Banora Point, pleaded guilty in Tweed Heads Local Court on Friday to using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.

Magistrate Geoff Dunlevy said Wonnocott had used a public forum and wrote: “QnA should be shut down, you c**ts keep supporting the LGBT community and I will kill you all”.

Mr Dunlevy said Wonnocott had made full admissions to police and said “I don’t agree with the LGBT community”.

When asked about the ABC he told police “I want them to stop spruiking this f***ing community, the LGBT whatever f***ing they are.

“I wanted to scare them”

Mr Dunlevy said most members of the community were supportive of the LGBT community and found homophobia and transphobia generally offensive.

He noted Wonnocott’s lawyer’s submission that the LGBT community went against his religious beliefs.

But Mr Dunlevy said that was irrelevant.

He said Wonnocott had a history of intimidating people and using a carriage service to menace or harass, however accepted he was not someone who drank or used illegal drugs.

The court also heard Wonnocott worked with charities.

Mr Dunlevy sentenced him to nine months in jail with three months non-parole.

However, the sentence was immediately appealed and Wonnocott was granted appeal bail on the condition he obtained a mental health plan and did not access social media.
