Ely Beau Beevor pleads not guilty to Ballina police siege charges

A North Coast man allegedly armed himself with knives and a golf club during a six-hour siege in which he told tactical police he would not come peacefully and they would have to “shoot him”. Here’s the latest.

A North Coast builder allegedly armed himself with knives and a golf club during a six-hour siege in which he told tactical police he would not come peacefully and they would have to “shoot him”.

Ely Beau Beevor faced Ballina Local Court pleading not guilty to using a weapon to prevent lawful detention, hindering a police officer and assaulting an officer.

Police state in court documents officers were tasked to the 43-year-old’s house following a concern for welfare report about midday on November 21 last year.

Police had “grave concerns” for the Ballina man’s safety when they pulled up. Officers opened a window and noticed Beevor sitting in the lounge room.

It’s alleged the Ballina man refused to come to the door for officers and went to the kitchen where he armed himself with a knife.

Police allege specialist officers negotiated with Beevor for six hours and during the siege he armed himself with more knives and other weapons, including a golf club.

Beevor is accused of refusing to leave the property “peacefully” and warning police “they would need to come in and shoot him”.

Police state Beevor did eventually leave the home without further incident and was arrested.

However, Beevor allegedly refused to get out of a caged police car at Ballina Police Station.

It’s alleged he asked “Why was everyone laughing at me?” and an officer replied “Come on mate, just get out.”

Police accuse Beevor of hitting the officer in the face, resulting in capsicum spray being used as he continued to resist arrest.

The case has been adjourned to July 25 for hearing.
