Pair to face Tweed Heads court over armed robberies

A man and woman have been refused bail being intercepted by a team of police while they allegedly tried to flee a shopping centre with a stolen car.

Two people are due to face court in Tweed Heads on Monday following an alleged series of armed robberies.

A man, 26, and woman, 20, were charged in relation to a joint operation between NSW and Queensland police overnight.

Police will allege they were told the man, allegedly armed with a firearm, approached a woman at a service station at the corner of Darlington and Leisure Drives in Banora Point, demanding the keys to her vehicle, about 8.50pm on Saturday.

The woman refused and the man left the scene with his female passenger.

They were allegedly travelling in a stolen Porsche.

Police were informed about 9.40pm the Porsche had entered a shopping centre car park on Wharf Street in Tweed Heads where the 26-year-old man allegedly threatened another man with a knife.

He then allegedly entered the victim’s Hyundai Tucson.

The 20-year-old woman, allegedly armed with a firearm, also got into the Hyundai and the pair tried to leave the area, police said.

Police will allege Tweed Byron Police District and Queensland Police Service Special Emergency Response Team officers then attended the scene.

“The man allegedly crashed the car into two police vehicles while trying to leave the scene before he and the woman were arrested,” police said in a statement.

The man was taken to The Tweed Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

His companion was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon, robbery armed with an offensive weapon, possessing an unauthorised pistol and using an offensive weapon to prevent a police investigation.

The man was released from the hospital and also taken to the police station.

He was charged with robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon, robbery armed with an offensive weapon, two counts of driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period, possessing an unauthorised pistol and using an offensive weapon to prevent a police investigation.

Police will allege the pair were involved in a series of aggravated armed robberies in Queensland and NSW from Friday, February 18 onwards.

They were refused bail and are expected to face Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday.
