A North Coast man has been charged after an alleged police pursuit led to a dramatic crash in South Grafton.

Police will allege a BMW rolled, leaving a man trapped inside, following a police pursuit.

Officers attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol command were patrolling on Bent Street when they tried to stop the black BMW SUV about 10.50pm on Saturday.

The male driver then allegedly crashed into an oncoming vehicle.

Following inquiries, police charged the 39-year-old driver, from Yamba, with engaging in a police pursuit, driving recklessly or furiously or in a speed/manner dangerous, drink-driving, driving while his licence was cancelled and driving furiously causing bodily harm.

He was refused bail and is due to face Grafton Local Court on Monday.

“It will be alleged that the driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated, which was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns,” police said in a statement.

“At the intersection of Bent and Ryan Streets, the vehicle crossed to the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming hatchback, causing the SUV to roll, hit a light pole, and come to rest on its side.”

Two occupants of the BMW, men aged 22 and the 39-year-old driver, were able to get out of the vehicle but a third man, aged 38, was trapped.

“He was released by emergency services before being airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital in a serious but stable condition,” police said.

The other two men are assisting police with their inquiries.

The two occupants of the hatchback, a man aged 58 and woman aged 31, were not injured.

Police established a crime scene and this was later examined by officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit.

Police have appealing for anyone with information about the crash, or with dashcam footage of the collision, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
