Actor Kristy Wright has detailed her secret romance with former Home And Away star Dieter Brummer.
Wright was among the many to pay tribute to Brummer, who took his own life at the weekend at just 45.
She said “the tears won’t stop flowing” as she shared several candid snaps of the pair together when they dated as stars of the TV soap in the late 1990s.
“Our young love was able to blossom in private,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Our first date was at Balmoral beach. He took me on a picnic. We ended up sitting there for almost 10 hours from the afternoon into the middle of the night discussing everything from the cosmos to our childhoods and our hopes and dreams. Anyone who knows Dieter knows how much he enjoyed discussion and debating ideas. I was a young girl from the burbs and he was Australia’s heart-throb … but … he was so normal! So down to earth … but still so interesting. I fell in love with him very quickly and fortunately for me he felt the same way. We were each others safety blankets and we were best friends. Even after we broke up years later, our friendship never died.”
The pair began dating in 1996 when Wright was 17 and Brummer was 19. He had just finished his four-year stint on the hugely popular TV soap, playing Shane Parrish.
It was a time before social media, when Home And Away actors were considered superstars.
“Dieter LOVED the outdoors,” Wright continued. “He was an adventurer through and through. He was brave, a risk taker. We spent many, many weekends camping around Australia. Both of us loved being out in the wild. We weren’t into parties and fancy industry events … we just needed our dogs, each other and the big open sky.”
Wright said the years she spent with Brummer shaped her “in the most profound way”.
She played Chloe Richards on Home And Away until 1999.
“He had high expectations of people because he knew that we as a species were capable of so much more,” she said. "He didn’t suffer fools and he was a proud member of the grammar police. He loved words. Loved knowing an obscure word that no one else knew. His favourite topic was existentialism. He was deep. Much deeper than most people know. I’m so grateful that we stayed friends and for over 25 years he has been a constant in my life and someone that I could call at any hour. We were that for each other. The world has lost a gift this weekend. A luminous, unique, complex man. A man who deserved more.”
Other former castmates to pay tribute to Brummer include Lynne McGranger, Ray Meagher, Laura Vazquez and Emily Symons.
“Dieter was a wonderful fresh faced good looking uncomplicated young bloke when he was on H&A over 25 years ago,” Meagher, who plays Alf Stewart, said.
“It’s very sad to hear of his passing at such a young age. Our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.”
McGranger said she was “utterly shocked” while Symons said she couldn’t believe the “absolutely tragic news”.
“Dieter was such a lovely, kind, genuine person,” she wrote on Instagram.
“I always enjoyed working with him. I will never forget his beautiful smile, he was a much loved member of our Home And Away family. Thinking of his loved ones at this difficult time.”
