Could John Laws and Alan Jones reshape Sydney’s radio world?

They ruled Sydney’s airwaves for generations and today Alan Jones angled with old sparring partner John Laws to a return to breakfast radio. ‘God we could set the world on fire’, Laws told Jones.

Alan Jones has angled for a return to breakfast radio.
Appearing as a guest on “old sparring partner” John Laws 2SM morning show, Jones indicated he would be interested in speaking with station owner Bill Caralis.

“In all things, I learnt this from the great John Laws, in all things give it every consideration,” Jones said to Laws asking, “would you do breakfast again?

“Talk to Bill.”

Laws said he was making an offer “indirectly” and that he would talk to Caralis.

Jones, 80, and Laws, 85, have known each other for more than 30 years, and have often disagreed on various issues. While dismissing any suggestion of a feud, they reminisced about the good old days.

“Of course we’ve exchanged a few words here and there but he and I actually get along pretty well. I happen to like Alan, I don’t like everything he says or does, nor does he like everything I say or do but I think he is a very worthwhile broadcaster and I think he has done a lot of good for a lot of people,” Laws said, adding: “Radio is not what it used to be.”

Jones stepped away from his top rating 2GB breakfast show in June last year, replaced by Ben Fordham, and taking on a new broadcast job on television at Sky News Australia.

At the time, Jones had been the number one breakfast host for a record 226 consecutive surveys.

In a wide-ranging interview that lasted around 20 minutes, Laws suggested several times that Jones return to radio.

“Why don’t you come here and work with me?” Laws mused. “God we could set the world on fire, you and me.”

In response, Jones said: “Put a bit of paper in front of me, you know what it is like, it is the same old rules isn’t it? They are putting bits of paper in front of me, I have to tell you.”

Jones said he missed radio.

“I miss the opportunity to discuss the sorts of things we are talking about now, you don’t have that freedom on television, it is very regimented,” he said.

When contacted directly, Caralis said: “No comment, you shouldn’t have rung. Good morning to you.”

The conversation also turned to KIIS FM duo Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, who trumped Fordham in the most recent radio ratings to become the top show in the Sydney market.

The 106.5 breakfast hosts triumphed with a 15.5 per cent share of the breakfast market, a jump of 2.6 percentage points on the previous ratings survey. Fordham’s show slumped 0.2 of a percentage points to a 13.3 per cent share of breakfast.

“I never begrudge anyone success, they have earnt it,” Jones said of the pair, Laws adding: “I think he is a very interesting bloke Kyle, I am quite fond of him.”

Meanwhile, Laws said he was fully vaccinated while Jones has had just one dose of Astrazenica and is ready for the second.

He did however consult doctors due to his ongoing health issues.

“My problem is, you are the only person I have told this to actually, why am I revealing all of this?” he said. “I have had seven blood clots on my lung for some time that I have to take all of this medication and stuff and so it was very difficult, the doctors didn't' quite know whether I should or whether I shouldn’t. Anyway, I have had my first jab and I am due for my second.”
