Big wave surfer Laura Enever has regained her “dancing legs” following the worst injury of her career.

The world record-holder for the largest wave paddled by a woman is finally back in the water after spending five months sidelined by a devastating leg injury.

“It was super tough,” Enever told Confidential.

“I only just started going back in the water last month, so it’s so good to be back and actually moving.”

The injury that left a “huge hole” in her leg occurred in December during the prestigious Eddie Aikau Invitational at Hawaii’s Waimea Bay after riding a wave to shore.

While standing in knee-deep water, her surfboard struck her with force that the fin drove deep into her upper leg.

“I’m still in hospital recovering from a serious fin chop to my upper leg from a freak accident that happened when I was on the sand after I surfed,” she explained in an Instagram post.

“The board hit me unexpectedly and awkwardly, and the fin pretty much went all the way into my leg. It was a scary situation and we thought my main artery had been damaged. I was rushed to hospital for surgery, and found out I was millimetres away.”

Back on her feet, Enever recently made her return to public life, stepping out at Fashion Week with Everau “for the first time in years.”

She is also planning to get back to doing what she loves most, chasing monster waves around the globe.

“I kind of have my eye around the world on spots I want to tackle and surf,” she said.

“The cool thing about big wave surfing is you don’t really know when it’s going to happen. You just have to wait for Mother Nature, and for the stars to align.”

Whether the next big swell calls her to Chile, Tahiti, Fiji, or beyond, Enever is ready.

“You’re always on standby,” she said.
