Nicole Kidman has vowed to work with a female director every 18 months.
The top Australian actor has made the statement as she stepped out at the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival in France, where she was presented Kering’s 2025 Women in Motion award.
It was a resolution she came to on as “there just wasn’t the number of (female) names that you could consider”.
“So, I went, I have to start to just say, well, this is how I’m doing it, and this is what I’m doing, and we’ll take the risk, and we’re going to mentor, and support, and help, and then really protect, because part of it is protecting and surrounding the women with, almost like, a force field of protection and support, so that they can do their best work,” Kidman said at the event.
“And then at the same time giving them the opportunity to not feel like this is the only chance, because a lot of it is ‘okay you get one shot’, which, as we know, creatively, is almost impossible.”
On top of fronting countless film and TV works, Kidman has run her own production company, Blossom Pictures, since 2010.
It was in 2017 at Cannes that she first made her pledge to work with more female directors and since then she has completed or has projects in development with 27.
Last week, the Academy Award winner walked the carpet in LA for the premiere of season two of Nine Perfect Strangers, which premieres on Prime Video on Thursday.
