THE reviews are in and it is good news for Top Of The Lake: China Girl.
The world’s top television critics have all weighed in on the much- hyped six-part Foxtel series that saw cast members Elisabeth Moss, Nicole Kidman and Gwendoline Christie walk the Cannes Film Festival red carpet in May.
Often hard to please, critics have lauded Kidman, Moss and Christie as a “power trio” in the latest screen effort from Academy-Award-winning director Jane Campion.
“They’re all such good actors, I don’t feel pressure,” Campion told Confidential ahead of Sunday night’s premiere.
“I feel proud and really good about the parts these actors have got and the work they did, and the fact people are interested in these women’s lives.”
Shot in Australia, the series picks up where Campion left off with the first instalment of Top Of The Lake in 2013.
Given the all-star cast, there is far more international interest than usual for a local production, which bodes well for the Foxtel drama.
Industry website Rotten Tomatoes gives the series a 96 per cent “want to see” rating.

“With its sharp writing, superior cast, evocative locations, seductively seamy subject matter and delicious performances, Top of the Lake is decidedly back in a major way,” Hollywood Reporter wrote.
“The mystery may move from the top of the lake to the depths of the ocean, but the tension, turmoil and totally addictive drama remain the same in Top Of The Lake: China Girl.”
The Guardian reviewer also heaped praise the director: “Campion is a bold, gutsy writer-director with impressive visual flair. As a mystery and a cop show, it is totalling compelling.”
Campion said viewers don’t need to have seen the first season.
“This is like a whole novel in itself; it explains itself,” Campion said.
