SYDNEY put on a stellar sunset for the premiere of Foxtel’s Top of the Lake: China Girl as cast, VIP guests and fans lined the forecourt of the Opera House for the red carpet affair.
Director Jane Campion walked the ruby rug alongside the night’s main attraction and star of the show Nicole Kidman, telling Confidential it was “especially special” to hold the premiere in Sydney.
“The series is all set in Sydney and it looks so amazing,” Campion said. “I love Sydney, it’s a city that really knows how to celebrate and when you’ve enjoyed it like this with its beaches, its extraordinary diverse life and wealth, from the privileged to the poor, it’s a great tapestry.
“Especially working with Nicole, one of our extraordinary world actors, to have her be in it and for us to have completed the journey that was really cool.”
Campion’s real-life daughter, Alice Englert, who stars in the TV miniseries said she felt “really lucky” to score a role in the film.
“At one point mum said ‘I am going to give you something in this next one’ and she really did. She said she really knew what I was capable of as an actor. She knew what she could ask for with the character.”
Englert said she was in awe of the opportunity to premiere the project at the Sydney Opera House.
“I couldn’t have possibly ever dreamt to have screened in such an amazing place,” she added.
Other cast from miniseries who attended the premiere included Clayton Jacobson, Lincoln Vickery, Yianni Warnock and Angjee Douangphoumy.
Guests invited to the screening of the first two episodes last night included Marta Dusseldorp, Ksenija Lukich and Jenni Baird.
However they didn’t answer questions on the red carpet, instead choosing to give the stars and director their well deserved time in the sun.
The show which also stars Elisabeth Moss and Gwendoline Christie premieres on Foxtel’s BBC First on August 20.
