AUSTRALIA’S TV networks should follow Foxtel’s lead in supporting locally made drama over reality TV.
A Place to Call Home star Abby Earl said the incredible success of the period drama — now airing in more than 120 countries after it was ditched by Channel Seven — proves audiences want to watch “something thought provoking and entertaining at the same time”.
“Reality TV is not inspiring enough,” she said.
“It is the fast food of television. You don’t think. You just watch.
“It’s important to be confronted with other ideas ... and I think it’s time other networks stepped up.”
The 27-year-old said the critical acclaim for A Place to Call Home — which begins its fifth season on Sunday, October 8 — has also proved to be “life changing" for her and her co-stars.

Last night co-star David Berry made his debut on global smash series Outlander, while Earl has just returned from a six-week stint in London to explore new opportunities.
“I thought I would fly under the radar when I was over there, but the show is one of their most loved dramas in the UK,” she said, laughing.
“I was recognised half a dozen times a day. Even while I was on a date.”
A Place to Call Home, The Story So Far premieres on Foxtel’s Showcase this Sunday at 7.30pm.
