SHE lights up the screen in popular period drama A Place to Call Home and has been branded one of the country’s hottest new talents, but Abby Earl is so petrified of the spotlight she dreads attending events.

The bubbly blonde has revealed she almost didn’t make it on to the Logies red carpet two years in a row after becoming racked with fear moments before hitting the ruby rug.

“I have been to two Logies and both years, just before we have gotten on the red carpet, I’ve said, ‘no, no, I’m not doing it, can’t do it, sorry,’ and have gone back to my room, into the corner of the room and said ‘I will just watch’,” she said.

“Both years they have said, ‘send in Noni (co-star Noni Hazlehurst), only Noni will get her out’.

“So both times she has gotten me on the red carpet.”

Earl, who plays Anna Bligh on the hit Foxtel series, said her apprehension is simply due to her not feeling as though she deserves fame.

“It’s a case of me not liking the attention.” she said. “I just feel silly, I feel like I am not a big deal.

“When people say, ‘you are so beautiful, you are so sexy,’ I just think, ‘oh, my gosh, I am not, it is so not true’. I feel like, why is there attention on me? I don’t feel worthy of it, I feel really uncomfortable.

“But you just have to act through it. I know I am lucky to be able to do this for a living ... but often it’s all acting. At the end of the day, it is what I am paid to do, so I think suck it up, stop complaining and do it and if you’re going to cry, cry when you get home.”

A Place To Call Home is up for two gongs tonight; Best Drama Program and Most Outstanding Drama Series.

“I am so thrilled for the show,” Earl said.

“It is the industry and fans giving you a nod and that’s what you do it for — respect and making people happy.”
