In terms of the competition’s defenders, we pay tribute to some of the really good ones here.

Coaches love them, teammates adore them, but sometimes their work goes slightly unheralded - but not now.

Sammy Snowden (West Juniors)

Always reliable, Snowden is the type who rarely gets beaten. Snowden also provides a flow of rebound possession off the half back line.

Anise Johnston (Wilston Grange Division 1)

Known as Johnno, don’t let the smile lure you into a false sense of security if you are asked to line up next to her.

Not many girls beat Johnno one-on-one. She has really developed her game over the past couple of years and just gets better and better.

Kirsty ‘Chicken’ Brooks (Everton Wolves)

You have to be having a good day if you were an opponent of “Chicken” Brooks and get one over her. No not much can get past this ferocious tackler - who was also a great user of the football.

Neva Bell (Morningside)

Bell is simply amazing because she rarely gets beaten one on one, no matter who she is playing against.

Bonnie Starling (Tweed Coast Northern Rivers)

Starling was as good as any defender in the competition. She brings the team back out when the opposition sneak inside their attacking 50m zone which is appreciated by teammates. But she is not alone. The likes of Ella Gonsal, Coco Colefax, Elise Devery and Bella Gleed continue to get the job done for their Tweed Coast Northern Rivers.

Skye Howells (Surfers Paradise)

What a player Howells is to have down back where she reads the game so well. Her strong marking also makes Howells a grand contributor to the side.

Amelia Smith (Southport)

Tough and uncompromising, Smith is not big in stature but her toughness cannot be questioned. She is as tough as nails while also having a great understanding of her strengths. Take her on at your peril.

Tyra Bell-Brooks (Victoria Point)

A pacy defender who’s tough, Bell-Brooks reads the play well and is cool under pressure. She uses the ball well coming out of defence and brings an energy to the team.

Tiara Steel (Victoria Point)

Steel by name and steel nature, Tiara is a tough defender, skilled as well as being versatile enough to play in any position on the ground. But when she takes up a defensive posting she has performed strongly.

Ember Barnsdale (Victoria Point)

A hard working and skilful back, Barnsdale has proven to be a very successful addition to the Sharks’ back divisions.

Tiani Sassen (Victoria Point)

Perfectly suited to defence, Sassen has displayed uncanny judgement knowing when to attack and when to hold back. Sassen has a real team first mentality and holds her own in one-on-one duals.

Chloe Harrison (Coorparoo)

A constant across the halfback line, Harrison’s backline craft has gone up another level this year. Her ability to play off her opponent when needed and intercept has been a massive contributor to the team’s success so far this year. Defenders often don’t get many accolades, but right now is Harrison’s moment in the limelight.

Jorja Hargreaves (Coorparoo)

Hargreaves is another tremendous defender for the Roos. She has shown this season that she is best suited to play on the opposition small forwards and her ability to shut down opponents has helped the team greatly. An emerging player, Hargreaves is one of the first picked in the defensive area each week.

Amilia Reeves (Moreton Bay)

Reeves is a tremendous asset to the Lions with her ability to be a key member of the back line.

Luca Jenson (Tweed Coolangatta)

Strong and reliable, Jenson has a reputation for being able to lock down the opposition’s best forwards.

Sarah O’Brien (Maroochydore)

O’Brien is a great comfort to teammates as she rarely gets beaten one-on-one and takes a strong mark - all while having a smile on her face. O’Brien also has a great kick.
