The SEQ AFL under-17 girls’ footy has resumed and we will be there providing weekly coverage of the competition.
But you just won’t be reading about the competition’s biggest and best players, but also many of the other players who help make a team tick across Div 1 and Div 2..
REDCLIFFE’S TRIBUTE TO THE DECEASED FATHER OF A TEAMMATE
Today, in the first of 15 themed stories, we present some of the Big Effort players from their respective clubs following a round of action highlighted by a thrilling 4-3-22 to 2-2-14 win by Moreton Bay over Maroochydore.
Due to injury both teams dropped down to 14 players each to even out of the game, with the Roos’ Milly, Ruby and Izzy performing strongly for Maroochydore, while Olivia and Rosie snared the coach award.
In other Div 1 games Tweed Coolangatta Blues inched past Wilston Grange, 2-15-27 to 2-0-14, Victoria Point Sharks were in form against Surfers Paradise, winning 7-10 to 3-2, Wests Juniors defeated Broadbeach, Burleigh downed the Bombers and Morningside defeated Redcliffe.
In Div 2, Everton Wolves had a sensational one point win over Caloundra, 35-34, while Aspley worked hard to get past Wynnum.
Wilston Grange’s depth was evident with a 5-7 performance in its win over Kenmore, while Sandgate at the bye.
Ruby Cox (Southport)
An undersized ruck, Cox is someone who battles all day and who rarely gets beaten. She has a big motor and infrequently gets chopped out or takes a break.
Poppy Lindsay-German (Everton Wolves)
Lindsay-German has improved out of sight, a tribute to her commitment both on and off the field.
Billi Hutton (Tweed Coast Northern Rivers)
The team’s ruck and skipper, Hutton leads by example with her actions on and off the field.
Amber Grace Cullen, Amelie Angus, Poppy Barber (Redcliffe)
Redcliffe have a lot of effort players, but top of the tree would be Amber Grace Cullen and Amelie Angus who both play in the backline, and another mid fielder who also swings forward, Poppy Barber.
Eve Keating (Coorparoo)
A forward, Keating’s skills and football knowledge were improving weekly. Willing to learn, Keating has been given roles on the field new to her which she has embraced.
Josie Sorenson (Coorparoo)
A back player who always asks questions at training, Sorenson is looking for improvement through feedback. She has a want to learn and develop her game each week.
Indi Van Noord, Leila Travers and Shakhyah Knights (Sandgate)
The Hawks have plenty of players who go that extra bit, but players in particular who give everything on the field leaving nothing in the tank include Noord, Travers and Knights.
Isla Dennell, Coco Armstrong, Mackenzie Hale, Ava Jacobsen (Wynnum)
Wynnum’s early season has seen plenty of girls putting in, but four who have stood out include these magnificent four. In round one they put all of their effort into the game, with Hale finishing with a Best on Ground performance.
Eliana Quezada and Frances Brick (Wilston Grange)
Defender Quezada and midfielder Brick were two who were unrelenting in their attack on the ball and their second and third efforts on game day.
Penny Stringer (Tweed Coolangatta)
A top flight player last season, Sringer brings plenty of effort and energy to the team while playing a variety of positions.
Tegan Hamilton, Sienna Peckham, Keeley Pittm Zuri Hough (Victoria Point)
What an awesome foursome these girls are. Peer toward them at training or each Sunday during matches and you see their effort areas.
Amelia Ella (Tweed Coast Northern Rivers)
Tweed Coast Northern Rivers extra energy machine, Ella has been recognised by the Gold Coast Suns who have her in its 18 years squad. When she cannot play due to Suns’ commitments, Ella volunteers to be a runner for her teammates.
Maroochydore
Maroochydore coach Damien Smith said while he tried to think of a particular effort player on the field, he struggled to single anyone out. “I don’t think we can say one girl has a greater effort than another. All the girls give a great effort.’’
Giorgia Brambilla (Broadbeach)
Who’d want to be a forward up against Brambilla? She is all effort, a defender who never gives her opponent an even break.
Maggie Parr, Issy Gaffney and Violet Gleeson (Wests Juniors)
Wing Parr and midfielders Gaffney and Gleeson were might in their effort areas for Wests juniors. It is little wonder Wests can get on a roll when these three are on the field. They
leave it all out on the field, play at full pace and keep giving second and third efforts.
Jaci Plumpton, Madeline Wilkin, Charlotte Kerkow, Charlotte Nugent, Ashleigh Klamer (Aspley)
If the Hornets group was looking for inspiration, look not further than this terrific five girls who were capable to producing those second effort plays which teammates and the coaching staff so appreciate.
Morningside
Panthers coach Alan McGrath said one of his defenders, Renee Siganto, was the type of player who “never gives up in the backline’’.
