In a long season, or against challenging opposition, what a godsend it is for a coach to have players who can swing around the field filling in a variety of positions.
The SEQ AFL under-17 footy competitions have those versatile types in spades.

Take for example Aspley ace Sienna Trentepohl, Gorillas’ Miss Versatile Annie Roach, Everton elite Abbi Odgers or Wests Juniors wonder Bailey Cooke.
But every team has them, and we take pleasure in presenting some of the most versatile girls in their respective teams here.
Eliza Wightley (Tweed Coolangatta)
Coaches Darren Boucher and Dave Palmucci know they are in good hands when Wightley fronts each Sunday for business. She is her team’s most versatile player, holding down key positions at either full forward or fullback.
Abbi Odgers (Everton Wolves)
Wow, the Wolves were fortunate to have Odgers in the club. She is a genuine utility player, someone who can be thrown anywhere on the ground. And she does not just plug a gap in the side - she tends to be able to dominate any role asked of her.

Libby Warwick (Southport)
If Warwick was taller, she would absolutely have played every role for the Sharks. As it is, think of a position, just pick any position, and rest assured, Warwick will fill the void. “The only one she has not played is ruck,’’ said Southport co-coach Marcus Gazsik.
Bailey Cooke, Grace Dickson and Gracie Hyne (Wests Juniors)
Cooke was a noted defender or mid field ace, but in all honesty she has played almost everywhere over the past couple of seasons.
Grace Dickson and Gracie Hyne are another two who know every inch of Oakman Park. They can play up forward, down back or through the midfield - and often do.
Abby Chardon, Piper Mellifont and Athena Kandilierakis (Sandgate)
What a tremendous asset to the Hawks is Chardon, who is just as good swinging to either end of the ground as a fullback or full forward.
Piper Mellifont and Athena Kandilierakis another two little rippers for coach Shane Watterson. Both were tough defenders who also step up when asked to carry the load in the midfield.
Madison Green (Redcliffe)
Green is a true all-rounder who plays in defence, can pinch hit in the ruck and can move down forward. She would need a good sized dinner and an early night the evening after playing given all the energy she burns in a variety of positions, that’s for sure.
Kyra McNamee (Broadbeach)
A noted life saver from the Mermaid Beach SLSC, Kyra McNamee has another skill of a weekend as well - swinging between mid field or a defenders role for the big Cats.
Mackenzie Hale, Olivia O’Rielly, Ruby Walker (Wynnum Manly)
Now here’s a terrific trio. Hale, O’Reilly and Walker were comfortably the most versatile players in a wonderful young group of players down at the Ropley Road Park at Wynnum West.
Remy McDonald (Maroochydore)
McDonald is moulding into a nice true all-rounder for the Maroochydore side, developing a nice array of skills whether she is playing forward, in the ruck or at centre half back.
Eva Sceney and Annie Roach (Wilston Grange)
No, you won’t be seeing double if you get yourself down to Hickey Park on a Sunday and watch the under-17 girls playing. It is just that Sceney and Roach were so versatile, they roamed between roles from quarter to quarter. Both play multiple key positions like centre half back, centre half forward, full forward, full back or even in the ruck.
QAFL COLTS LATES
Ember Barnsdale, Lahanna Field, Rydah Finney (Victoria Point)
You talk about awesome foursomes. Well meet these girls who, along with forward ace Tiara Steel, were all multiskilled footy players. Barnsdale can swing between defence and the mid field with ease, while Field goes one better. She is a mid field workhorse and defender, but can also play up forward.
In a similar vein Rydah Finney may start forward, but don’t be surprised to see her move through the mid field and end up in defence.
Ava Henderson (Tweed Coast Northern Rivers)
One of the Tigers emerging talents from the beautiful far north coast of NSW is Ava Henderson. She is tall, fast and highly competitive. “She regularly drops into the ruck where she is growing in effectiveness,’’ said coach Steve Foreman. “She is also a great marking target in our forward structure and a reliable and organised defender.’’.
Tarnia King, Kate Bosschieter (Coorparoo)
King plays in the back line but is able to move into the midfield when required. She is a strong contested player, and plays her role in whatever role she is asked to do.
Mid fielder Bosschieter is now playing a new position in the engine room after mainly accumulating footy experience in a back role. But she is more than capable of switching roles where needed and can hold her own.
Neva Bell and Aoibha Lynch (Morningside)
Panthers coach Alan McGrath said Neva Bell and Aoibha Lynch were tremendously versatile footy players who could be relied upon taking on a number of roles.
Sienna Trentepohl and co. (Aspley)
Sienna Trentepohl was a multi-skilled footy player capable of playing full forward, centre half forward, half back flank or midfield.
At the drop of a hat Ashlee Geggs can also swing between the mid field, down back or move up forward.
High praise also for these two first year players, Mia Stevenson and Gisele Bliss. They have taken to the code like a duck to water, so much so that Stevenson can move to ruck from the forward line or vice versa, while Bliss can play ruck, forward or wing.
