Palm Beach Currumbin produced a finals’ type performance to put fellow contenders Wilston Grange in their place and draw a line in the sand between themselves and the trailing pack.
Gorillas coach Darren Fazldeen said PBC were the team to beat. They won 9-8-62 to 5-2-32.
“Our execution hurt us today, but look, we know they are the team to beat,’’ Fazldeen said.
“We all know that.”

At Hickey Park, PBC’s midfield gunners led by left footed Tai Hayes, Beau Lester-Sutherland and Tom Grimster and the pressure applied by their back men proved too much to bare for a toiling Wilston Grange.
Wilston-Grange did pretty well restricting forward focal point Jack Cahill and there were only sprinkles today from Jack Foggo and Nelson Beikoff who has been on fire, but PBC had plenty going for them.
But the day belonged to the Luca Laverde-led PBC backmen and offensive midfield efforts.
“Today was the first game that we met our tackle targets,’’ said coach Glen Clark.
“We have been talking about coming into finals that defence is going to win it and we have to be ruthless around the contest.’’
Clark said the offensive effort made up for his squad over using the hand ball in attack, while PBC’s closing speed around stoppages was excellent.
Tenacious Grange trailed by just two goals at the long break even though PBC had generated 10 scoring shots to three.
But the vital third term saw PBC ramp up, with goals by Macklin Johnston, Cahill twice and Darcy Freeman, all the while restricting their rivals to just one goal- by outstanding ruckman Marcus Zipf after super lead up play by Maverick Gavaicoa.
It was 7-7-49 to 3-1-19 entering the final term.

Not withstanding the defensive pressure applied around the fall of the ball and across the PBC centre half back line, Wilston Grange couldn’t ice the few hand chances they generated toward the end of the third quarter which left them out of the contest trailing by six goals.
Against any other side you would not write the home side off, but PBC were table toppers for a good reason.
Wilston Grange did pull one back to open the scoring in the last term when Hayden Hall found the big sticks, but the gap was too great.
And Grange’s spirit was in no doubt and when they play in the finals they will be no pushovers.
“Our game plan is there. But our execution let us down,’’ Fazldeen said. “But full credit to them.
“They move the ball well, and a lot of them have played together for a long time.
“We will be ready next time.’’
PBC are the ants pants.
PBC had by far the better of the first two quarters, but plucky Wilston Grange clung to their rival’s jersey to trail by just two goals.
Two late majors from Hayden Hall and James Miller rewarded the gorillas for their toil, with Hall’s 50m goal a pearler.
But PBC’s midfield mob negated the outstanding work down in the ruck from Wilston Grange’s No. 13.
The right side class of Jack Foggo and Nelson Beikoff-Smart across the forward flank contributed to a cocktail of success for the PBC side which generated 10 scoring shots across the half.
PBC’s back division also choked the Gorillas across its centre half back, rebounding for the PBC mids with Ezekiel Stortenbeker solid.
Surfers coach Alistair Mitchell said despoite his team’s loss to the Roos, he was “really proud’’ because they never gave up.
He said BEau Smith led by example, playing on with a bad foot because he did not want to leave his side one short.
“Maroochy are a great side and showed why they are well up on the ladder,’’ Mitchell said.
“We showed some great intent but it was our inability to hit the scoreboard and a poor second quarter lapse that let them dominate.’’

PBC coach Glen Clark wanted a physical presence from the midfield duo and he got that in shape.
Luca Laverde (PBC)
He kicked four goals, but also controlled the backmen which greatly restricted Wilston Grange’s bid to challenge inside the 50m.
Tazz Kerr and Cameron Gillespie (Broadbeach)
Both boys were as busy as a bee, driving their side to victory. in a very tight contest, much closer than the score indicates,
Billy Bowes, Max Cooper and william Trompf (Noosa)
The boys fought hard all day, providing quality ball out of the backline and defending well.
Will Draper and Ryliegh Uttering (Sherwood)
Draper was physical around the contest and rucked hard all day, while Uttering dominated with 11 shots on goal.
Joel O’Brien and Billy Bougoure (Sherwood)
Joel O’Brien was hard in and under and allowed Sherwood to attack from the contest, while Billy Billy Bougoure just worked hard forward and generated fast transitions.
Julian Cruice (Sherwood)
He was clinical all day and was everywhere creating inside ball movement.
Tanner Griffiths and Harry Taylor (Morningside)
Griffiths controlled the centre half back line and displayed great decision making and skill execution. Taylor in the middle won ball at the contest and displayed clean hands.
Ryley Egan and Monty Dorey (Sherwood)
Egan displayed speed and run and carry, while having a high work rate. Dorey toiled in the ruck all day and had plenty of second efforts in him.
Jarrod Green (Mt Gravatt)
Green was solid down back against quality opposition. He had a lot of intercept marks and put his body on the line.
Jack Turner (Labrador)
At centre half back he fought all day and took some good marks, taking the game on. Jack won his battle.
Eli Kenneally (Mt Gravatt)
He provided the Vultures with lots of runs around half back, giving his side quality ball for the forward line.
Ryan Constable and Kenny Sertli (Aspley)
Constable was great executing spoils and displayed communication skills while Sertli competed hard forward and laid on some good tackles.
Frankie Quinn (Aspley)
Quinn judged the ball well in the air and intercepted plenty of marks.
Marcus Zipf (Wilston Grange)
The tall ruckman lost nothing in comparison to his rivals and even kicked a goal.
Jack Thompson and Ryan Lewis (Wilston Grange)
Under pressure the boys did a good job across the midfield.
Tristian West (Wilston Grange)
West did a terrific job on PBC full forward ace Jack Cahill, the best in the competition.
Kai Odewahn, Oscar Pledge, Christian Milde, and Jake Seccombe (Surfers Paradise)
Odewahn was excellent in the forward pocket, Seccombe was a midfield bull and put his body no the line while Pledge had a season best match on the wing.
